Anyone trying for Berkeley?

I don't have the numbers to compete but still applied. Waiting for late April to be rejected is painful;)

Be optimistic! The fact that you put yourself out there and sent in an application is something already. There’s no way you would’ve sent that in if you didn’t believe at least a little bit that you have a shot. April will come soon enough so just stay positive and hope for the best!

Thanks! very true:) Should just focus on midterms and stop obsessing. I’m terrible at waiting!

What is your GPA? I applied with low GPA too

I’ve seen someone last year get accepted with 3.33 gpa that’s what giving me hope, if you’re above 3.2 and completed all the prerequisties for you major then you still have a chance, even if the odds are low.

I’m at 3.68 with IGETC and assist courses complete by Spring, but I applied to a capped major, so I’ll be shocked if I’m accepted. Doesn’t hurt to hope tho!:)

Exactly! At this point hope is the only thing we have left; there are no more grades to turn in or forms to update. Let’s just wait and see. By the way; I don’t know what major you applied as but a near 3.7 is nothing to dismiss.

i applied for psych, 3.86. sucks that they let us know so late :confused: Hope the best for everyone!

Good luck to everyone, especially those who applied to capped majors! (Psych, Econ, and Media Studies just to name a few).

I think the best threads on cc are the ones where we support each other. Everybodys super stressed because admissions are just around the corner, quarter system student have their finals next week, and people are scrambling to wrap up their prereqs. It doesn’t do anybody any good to doubt right now; so continue the optimism and things will turn out for the best soon enough.

I’m applying to UCB as a thread of hope but I know most likely they have much more qualified applicants and will likely reject me, but still it’s nice to know.

GPA: 3.255
Major: Sociology
Diversity Level: 9/10 (foster youth, ward of court, first generation college student, low income family, independent, turned my life completely around, and a few other things like overcoming depression, anxiety, PTSD)
PS: 8/10
Pre-Rec’s: 2/3 (The third was cut at my school due to budget cuts, but it says on Assist that many CC’s don’t offer it and students should just take it in their first semester at UCB).
IGETC Cert: Yes
AA-T in Major: Yes (I know it probably doesn’t matter, but there was a question on the app that asked so I’m including it!)

^ Considering that the Social Sciences in College of Letters and Sciences at Berkeley only accepts 23% of its applicants you should’ve opted for a major in the Arts and Humanities which accepts 42%

Everyone has to declare for those accepted to the College of Letters and Sciences, so just saying.

But good luck though.

@ocnative - With my GPA I don’t think it matters much :/

How do you declare Arts and Humanities over Social Sciences?

@Matt4200
It corresponds to the major you chose. If you would have picked philosophy for instance, you would have been declared in Arts and Humanities. Sociology falls under Social Sciences.
Cal evidently lets you switch majors quite easily once accepted into the college (so long as its still in Letters and Science), so some people have gone on to speculate that it may be easier to get into a less competitive major, and then switch once you are admitted

@Matt4200 I think your GPA is strong esp considering the challenges you’ve faced. The great thing about applying to UC is that you get to tell your story. Just writing my personal statement was rewarding. It made me proud of my humble, coal-town roots. We have strength that no university can bestow:)

@Freetofly112 - Isn’t that exploiting a loophole?

@SFpsyc - Thanks, life is a long road and each person leads their own path, some have the way paved for them, some have a bumpy road and some have pothole after pothole in their road, but it’s the journey that helps you appreciate life more, I hope you get in as well!

I’m trying for UCB as well, but at this point I’m more worried about not getting financial than getting an acceptance letter.

I’ve heard of that as well @Freetofly112. It’s tricky business when you try to do that because not all universities allow major changes so easily. I have a friend who was admitted to a university as a sociology major with the intent to change to engineering. Didn’t work out so well for him, unfortunately.

My application stats for UCB:
GPA: 3.78
Major: Physics
IGETC: Complete
I had a rough semester for Fall 2013 and included the reasons in my personal statements so I really hope it helps weigh in with my GPA.

We all have a fighting chance though, good luck to everyone!

@panchitus - Why didn’t you apply for financial aid? (I’m assuming from the UCSD thread)

Or why don’t you think you’ll get it

Well I applied, but didn’t…
I submitted my FAFSA in January with only my current college on it and didn’t get the memo I needed to put my transfer universities on it as well until a few days ago. So I am last of the barrel for first come first serve aid, and will be notified late for need based aid that I may be awarded.

@panchitus - The only real things you’d be disqualified from would be Work-Study and possibly the Cal Grant but if you did it before the 2nd you’d be okay for Cal Grant, other than that there’s still a lot of aid out there!
