My son received a likely letter and we've planned another visit to Dartmouth. He would love to attend a class while we are there but the only information we were given when we called the admissions office was for him to "show up" early to a class and ask permission when he arrived. (Students have been answering the phone.) That seems a bit awkward to me - - Has anyone else attended a class during a visit?

That sounds right to me. I did it last November. I felt real good about it at the time. It wasn't uncomfortable at all.

By the way, congratulations to your son.

Yep, they are pretty much on target. Professors really don't care who sits in on their classes. I saw a lecture by Prof. Stamm on International Law. Simply amazing. It sealed the deal for D-mouth.

Hi. Congratulations for your son. I sat in on a class (differential equations) last spring. Basically what they told you is correct. I was little surprised at the informality as well, but basically I got to admissions in the morning and they gave me a packet with all the classes and different schedulings, and told me I could go to any as long as I got permission. So I went to the department head for math, who blitzed (the campus email system) my professor like a half hour before the class started, to give him a heads up. He was perfectly fine with it, and I felt really comfortable sitting in. I guess that's just more points for Dartmouth and its atmosphere. Okay I'll stop ... but basically I was already in love and sitting in on an actual class only made me fall further in love. Waiting till April will be so much fun. Ah well. Congratulations to your son and best wishes.

lol I don't know about Dartmouth, but when my mom and I went to Yale, we decided to sit in on a class. The class had like 10 people in it...even so, the professor was extremely friendly and insisted we come in and watch. It was a really nice, relaxed atmosphere. I can't imagine that D would be that much different.

Congrats to your son!

Schmerin--do you know what subject he'd prefer to sit in on? I could recommend some profs.

DD sat in on a frosh biology class, it was a relatively large lecture, her going was no big deal.

I just attended the class....if it's a big class, they don't care....lots of classes don't even keep track of who shows....so just goto a big frosh class and you'll be good

Thank you so much - - It helps to know that is the way visits are typically handled!

Kelsey - Do you have any suggestions for English/Literature profs?

I sat in on an English class at Dartmouth. It only had four people in it, but it was fine-- not awkward at all. The only awkward part was that on my way up to the class my flip-flop broke, so I had to walk barefoot up to the professor afterwards to thank him and introduce myself (and hastily explain why the hell I only had one shoe on) and then walk barefoot all the way back to my friends dorm way across campus. It was quite embarrassing. But at least it as warm weather.

Schmerin--I haven't taken any English classes yet, even though technically that is my major. Funny how that works out. But I hear Pease is quite a character. If you get a chance to sit on a class of his, I'd hear it's quite an experience.

lol Scimmia. I stubbed my toe against the statue of Penn's first headmaster right before the info session and ended up bleeding all over MY flip flop. the info session dude had to offer me a band aid when I kept pouring water on my toe. I then had to buy Penn flip flops...and actually wrote part of my Why Penn essay about it lol

Sit in on "The Masculine Mystique" with Peter Travis. He's the head of the English Dept. and I LOVE his class. Sometimes his lectures are just on reading we've done, but I really really enjoy that class and Travis is pretty amazing, in my opinion.

Try to sit in on Ehud Benor's "Magic, Science and Religion" in the Rel. dept. I had Benor last term and he was a very good lecturer... high-level and thought provoking. He's also in the Dart Review's "best prof" list.

Thank you so much for the suggestions. We are off to visit tomorrow and are very excited! (Though I am hoping the driving conditions will be okay. The thought of driving from Manchester does not thrill me if the roads are snowy! Can you tell I am a Southern Wimp?!!?)
