So according to collegeboard the interview is pretty important. I live way out in Southern California and since my mom lost her job I don't have any money to fly all the way out to Syracuse and talk with someone there. Do they have reps come out to various schools to talk to people or am I out of luck?

Anyways, on with the chance thread! And yes I know it is painfully average by CC's standards...

CA resident
Attend a competitive, private Catholic high school that sends most grads to 4 year universities
Will be applying for financial aid as my mom recently lost her job and that was the only source of income (single parent)
First generation? mom went to college for a couple of years but never graduated as she began working full time
Majoring in engineering (still undecided on what specific type, leaning towards electrical)

Rank: 114/284 (seems pretty bad to me...)
GPA: 3.6 W, 3.3 UW (gr. 9-12)
SAT: 1800 (590CR, 620M, 590W) retaking in November
SATII: 560 Lit 690 US History
AP/Honors classes: currently taking Lit, Government and Macroecon, took honors English the three previous years and Honors World/Honors US history sophomore/junior year.
ECs: Not many. I've played piano for 14 years and guitar for 2. No awards as I was never into playing at competitions. I play both at church sometimes, am in the school worship band (play at Mass once a month), and am helping a few hours each week with the Christmas musical at my elementary school this year. I also play tennis (hopefully for school this year, didn't make it last year). I'm a member of CSF too.

You have a weighted 3.6 which I believe is the average SY gpa and a 1210 CR+M which puts you just above the 50% mark and you’re not applying to whitman or newhouse, I’d say not interviewing won’t kill you. but there are regional interviews just so you know, in a lot of major cities SU will send a rep for 3 or 4 days but I hear spots fill up quickly, if you go on the website the dates are there.

Honestly, my sister had no problem getting into SU. She wasn’t the best student and got pretty average grades but still got it. It could have something to do with the fact that SU seems to except many students that went to highschool around the area but still. In my opinion, you seem to be in good shape academically.

But just a word of advice, if you want to go somewhere where the outside of school environment is exciting…don’t go to SU. There really isn’t much of anything to do around here. We do have great restaurants and people here are very friendly but the place most people spend their weekends at is Carousel Mall. Also, if you have bad allergies DON’T COME HERE. seriously, lived here my whole life and in syracuse you can have all 4 seasons in one day (no, I am not kidding. it snowed last week and then that same day it was 60 degrees and sunny) it completely screws with your immune system. People in my school are ALWAYS sick. But the school does have a beautiful campus and a great reputation academically with many friendly people. I wish you luck.

lmao i have a slightly different opinion. First of all, Less than Sammii, 3.6 UNWEIGHTED was the average GPA for SU students (and now it’s 3.7).I agree with Broadway to SOME degree. Believe it or not my Allergies are better up here (I live near NYC). I think that given the greek life here, you should be fine in terms of your expectations for “excitement”. If the Greek system isn’t your thing, then yeah, I guess so. HOWEVER, if you truely care about your school work (which I am assuming you do since your from socal) then being bored shouldn’t be a problem. Whatever down time you have could be spent on EC’s relating to your major, or not. Not to mention all of the club sports and other activities here too.

Although a word of advice, traveling is going to cost a lot, especially to go along with the 50 grand syracuse makes you shell out a year. Personally, Id take that into consideration if this is one of your top choices

i think you’re perfect for syracuse and you will definitely get in!
…or maybe i’m just saying that because from what you’ve said i’m realy similar too you.
and i really wanna go there too!
good luck =)
