I am an incoming MCB fresh in L&S and I'm taking Math 1A, Chem 1A, and a Bioengineering Seminar in Fall 2009 which is 9 units. I originally wanted my 3rd class to be Asian American R2A for my GE but seeing as both classes have filled up already, I don't think I'll be able to get in at this point.

I have completed the Quantitative Reasoning, American Cultures/History/Institutions, Foreign Language, Arts and Literature, Historical Studies, Social & Behavioral Sciences requirements through community college or high school.

I have NOT completed the R&C, Biological Sciences (will finish with Bio 1A in soph), Physical Sciences (will finish with Chem 1A in fresh), International Studies, Philosophy & Values requirements.

Could anybody please recommend me a class that is pretty easy (so I can focus on math and science) that I could sign up for in Phase II? Please and thank you!!!

I recommend that you take 15-16 units as opposed to 13 units. CalSO’s categorical recommendation for everyone to take 13 units is extremely stupid, especially for students who took lots of AP/IB/CC courses in high school and built up lots of work tolerance

Try a classics course, a lot of them meet P&V and they generally don’t fill until late in phase 2.

Classics 10A, 34, 121, 130, and 163 all have open seats and meet the P&V requirement

I have heard people who found it too easy wishing that they went back and took that extra class, plus the extra units help you slightly with TeleBEARS.

For some people, taking 13 units might be a good idea, like students who come from lower performing high schools, or had very weak course loads in high school, etc. but it is not a good idea for most people (i.e. those of us who had to work are butts-off to get in).

ohsnap422: if you have AP credits, I wouldn’t worry about it. Freshmen year is supposed to be the adjustment year so if you find that you have too much free time, good! at least that’s how I’m gonna look at it. after freshmen year, it’s serious business.

I have heard of students (including some of my friends) get addicted to 13 units, and can’t stand to take more than 13 units.

BTW, @eyeheartphysics, the most reasonable proponents of 13 units your first semester limit it at that; 13 units your first semester. Spring your freshman year (unless you are a non-FPF spring admit) is not generally considered an adjustment period that calls for a lighter load. After being in Berkeley for a semester, you should be relatively adjusted to Berkeley.

Also, too much free time can be poison, I saw it happen to a couple of my roommates freshman year. They took 13 units and had a lot of free time and then ended up playing computer games all day and really getting bad grades (i.e. GPAs around 2.5).

well, it doesn’t seem like anyone’s answered the question yet. maybe you could choose another r&c class like italian studies r5a. There are still 2 spots left in asian american studies so maybe when you phase two you can waitlist. If not, you could do an R&C class, but I don’t know if they’re easy or not. or if you’re a native speaker you could take a language. I wanted to take chinese 1ay, but 5 units was too much. if you’re still short 1-2 units you could take a decal class.
