I never spoke to any UF counselors so I don't know what to expect. I did see the chart on their website and it seems like they are surprisingly lax with 3's.

I will graduate HS with 11 AP credits 3 or above. I talked to a UMn counselor who said I would "pretty much enter as a Sophomore." Can I expect a similar experience here?

Also, anyone with experience please describe how first-year classes are like.

it is what the website says it is. i think they only accept 45 credits now, which would mean you could graduate 3 semesters early if you wanted.

what specific concern do you have about the AP credit?

They are lax with 3’s as in they will give you the same credit as if you got a 5 whereas many other schools I’ve seen won’t even recognize a 3.

All those course numbers look alien to me. I just want to know, where do those AP credits actually go? Are they just credits added up toward a degree or do I get out of some intro classes? Should I get out of intro classes?

they count towards your total credits, and fulfill graduation requirements. as far as the university is concerned, they are equivalent to having taken the class at UF.

As far as your question, “should I get out of intro classes,” that depends on a lot of things. It’s not one size fits all. For instance, if you are pre-med, that major has certain requirements (prerequisites) and medical schools have certain requirements. As an example, I think UF pre-med requires math thru Calc 1. Now you could have AP’d out of Calc I and think, ‘wow, I’m done with math.’ However, most medical schools want to see you actually take a college calculus course. They want to see that you can handle the actual college class. So, you can AP out of the Calc I, if you have the score, but you should still take another math class (probably Calc II) to show that you can do the work. There is a pre-health booklet online that you can read which goes into greater detail of the do’s and don’ts re: med school.

In much the same case, if you are going into engineering, depending on how secure you feel in your hard sciences that you AP’d out of, you might still want to retake them. As you said, UF accepts a score of 3 for comparable credit. D’s a chemE major. She AP’d out through Calc II. She went directly into calc III. However, math is her biggest strength, so it was no trouble for her. She made the decision to re-take Chem II (even though she’d tested out) and to take the Honors physics curriculum, again, although she tested out. She wanted to make sure she had strength in the fundamentals. She used her AP credit for all the gen-eds, except diversity.

I’m sure other majors are similar. Use your AP credit “smartly.”

English- definitely do not retake
History- doesn’t really matter.
Math and Science- retake if its a prereq for your major/premed don’t if you just want to be done with it
Language- don’t retake as retaking leads to taking more language courses
