The virtual tours of the Units aren't any good because there's not enough details about organization. Is there anyone who lived in a unit 3 triple that can answer some simple questions for me? I'm moving into a Unit 3 triple in a couple weeks and I'm in the process of deciding how to organize all my stuff. I'm trying hard not to bring too much stuff, but I don't want to under pack either. Anyway, do the triple dorms have closets, or drawers for my clothes? If so, do I have to share closet and dresser drawer space with my roommates?

Also: Do you suggest buying a laptop lock for my desk?
Is it even possible to lock it to the desk?
Do I really need to bring my own kitchen wear (plate, bowl, utensils)?
Can it get cold in the room at night?

Any help for a new transfer spring admit will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Some people I know use laptop locks, some don’t. If you and your roommates are careful about always closing the door when you leave, theft isn’t a big issue. I personally brought a plate, bowl, cups, and utensils, but I don’t really like using plastic forks etc. It’s personal preference. Some people just buy disposable stuff… But you’ll need something of some sort. Some rooms can get cold, depending on if your room faces the sun or not. We’ve never used the heat in my room, at least.

4 drawers below the bunk bed (which one of my roommates and I funnily found are not attached to the bunk bed at all, it’s just that the bunk bed is on top of those drawers). One close for each person, opened by two doors. Next to the closets is a set of drawers (I think…5 or 6 of them?). And a 2-shelf small bookshelf thing.

How are you moving to Berkeley? If you’re doing it with your parents or something, you can bring stuff and then when moving in if you decide you have too much you can just have your parents take some stuff back…that was the plan with me and my parents when I moved in.

A lot of people get too lazy to use the laptop locks they buy, especially if you often take your laptop with you to the lounge. But if you are paranoid about theft and sure you’ll use your lock, then buy it. Otherwise, don’t. If you have the single desk (not underneath the bed) you can’t really attach it to the desk that easily, you’ll have to attach it to the post on your bed or something. If you have one of the desks under the bed, then it’s easy.

We’ve found it’s much better if you have your own utensils. Just bring one cup, one spoon, one fork, one plate, one bowl. Not hard to store (I put mine in a little plastic 3-drawer container thing, the ones you can get at Target). And a measuring cup if you plan on doing any baking of birthday cakes or something (or else you’ll be like me and my friends, using the conversion “one cup is 48 tablespoons” lol). Bring dishwashing soap then too.

Coldness depends on your room. For example, the one I am in gets warm VERY easily so coldness isn’t an issue (rather, heat is the issue…) but my friend’s room doesn’t heat well (the heater doesn’t work so great) so it gets cold easily. It’s all chance.

Hope that you get a corner room! It’s sorta bigger, especially if you get the corner room on the side of the janitor closet. Or Beverly Cleary does have bigger/nicer rooms, I’ve heard…

Do you know if your roommates will be spring admits too? I know some spring admits are here in the fall…don’t know how that works. I just know they go to the extension but it’s like they’re fall students.

Believe me when I say this: people are stupid and think no one will still their belongings in the dorms. I know someone who had their bike stolen and they locked it up BUT they didn’t lock it up with the U-lock properly. I know someone whose had their MAC laptop stolen from the study lounge IN the dorms. DON’T TRUST PEOPLE TO LEAVE YOUR STUFF WAITING THEIR WHEN YOU GET BACK. LOOK AFTER U STUFF. THERE ARE THIEVES AROUND WHEN YOU DON’T KNOW IT. and that kind of scares me. I feel like my privacy is being violated and I’m not always safe but Watch your back. That’s where ever u go.

That being said, any thief can easily cut ur tiny little laptop lock and take it. Don’t leave ur door open and tell ur roommates not to. my roommate never used to listen to me and she had her stuff stolen sometimes.

I brought a bowl, and some utensils. However, my mom threw in some paper plates which i thought i wouldn’t use but they actually come in handy. i recommend them. how many times do you want to go to the bathroom and wash your bowl lol it’s not worth wasting 5 mins when u can just throw a plate away. but i guess it’s more green or whatever to do so.

as far as organization, u should have enough room for your stuff. i was never in a triple and one of my friends that IS in a triple, lives in clark kerr so thats diff. However, there should be enough room unless you’re paris hilton and bring like 30 shoes, 40 sweaters, etc.

Security really depends on how your floor mates are. Last year, I brought a laptop lock with me but I ended up never using it. I even left our door unlocked for long periods of time without any of us room mates being in it, and I even allowed people to stay in our room when there were none of us room mates in it. Nothing was ever stolen.

That’s good. You can’t really tell what your floor mates are like though as far as stealing. People can be so sly about it that no one would know it was them. My roommate would talk to a guy on our floor and he used to steal her stuff even and then she started INVITING him to our room! Also, some people who stay in their room, you might never meet or talk to them much to know what they’re like. I guess you got lucky.

I currently live in a Unit 3 triple. I get a closet, a big drawer under the closet, and two smaller drawers. It’s much less space compared to a double, but its manageable. I don’t share closet or dresser space with my roommates since they both have their own.

Laptop lock wise, my roommates both have one, and they tie the string to the beds. I don’t have a laptop lock, but my roommates and I always keep the door closed when we’re not there. I use a microwaveable tuberware, and I do have utensils, but I usually just steal plastic ones from the dining commons so I have a whole cup of them. I also steal toilet paper and paper towels from the restroom to use in the room. It can get cold, but it depends on if you turn on the heater. A lot of people don’t know that you can adjust the nozzle under the heater since it’s pretty well hidden. It shouldn’t get too cold, but do make sure you bring jackets, sweaters, and a decent blanket for your bed.

wow! there’s a heater in our rooms!?! haha! i bought my own. and i LOVE it. i get cold easily, so i use my heater ALL the time. I ordered mine from costco after i moved. and it’s also a fan too for the summer but the fan effing sucks. there’s nothin u can do to get cold when it’s hot but u can get very warm with a heater when it’s cold. thank god i’m in norcal.

and that’s a good idea! to steal paper towels. never thought of that. i always get it when i go out to get lunch or dinner.

The triples in the middle of the hallways of Unit 3 (i.e. not the corner rooms) don’t have three separate closets for each roommate if I’m remembering correctly…I think there are two full ones and then one “half” one or something like that. I don’t completely remember (I have a corner triple).

As for heat, it varies. The heater in my room is literally stuck on…perpetual heat. That really sucked in August. But it doesn’t work very well anyways. So you might want to bring a heater if you’re sensitive to the cold…on the other hand, you might want to bring a fan because it’s worse when it gets hot. :(

IMO, laptop locks are unnecessary. As someone else said, I think dorm theft is pretty rare…Now, I’m not going to be daft and claim it never happens…but my floor is very social and literally everyone knows absolutely everyone on the floor. Of course, people from outside or from other floors could come visit, and that’s when theft usually happens. Just close your door when you leave, and you should be fine. Personally, I think laptop locks are overkill.

Also, I’m pretty sure spring admits are put into rooms with fall admits…So that will limit your choice of desk/bed/drawers/pretty much everything…You are more than welcome to negotiate with your other two roommates, but keep in mind they’ve been there for half a year and are probably not going to want to rearrange all that much just for you.

Don’t bother with laptop locks. My dad bought me one but I never used it for more than like a few hours. I tried to be careful about my things, but people left their laptops in the lounge all the time and nothing actually got stolen.

For your desk? No! People tend to be trustworthy considering they become a family on your floor (and your door locks automatically). If you’re concerned just hide it under a pillow or something, and always take it with you if you’re out on campus or in town studying and use the bathroom, etc.
I strongly, strongly suggest bringing snacks and basic kitchenware. You’ll want at least a fork and a spoon, a bowl, and a plate, a cup and/or mug, and probably a sponge for washing dishes in the bathroom.
It sometimes gets cold if you move your bed right under the window, but the heaters are adjustable - just make sure yours works, ours didn’t, and the maintenance staff is unreliable!

Wow! Thank you everyone! You all have been very helpful. I can’t wait to attend Cal.

I have yet to receive both of my roommates information and the specific building I will be living in from housing. I hope I get it soon. I hate to go in not knowing a little something about who I’ll be living with.
