Hi. I am thinking about applying to Penn ED to the College of Arts and Sciences for premed. I was wondering if people would recommend applying early decision to pursue this major. Also, are there any regrets from current premed students that applied ED to Penn? I am deciding between UPenn and UMich and want to go to the college that will maximize my chances of getting accepted into a good medical school. I have heard that going to a top top school for premed is not necessary as long as you do well. That's why I am wondering about Penn for undergrad (I do definitely want to apply to Penn when it comes time to medical school.).

Premed is not a major, it is a set of requirements that you must fill to apply to medical school. So as long as you take two semester of general chem, two of organic, two physics, two calculus, and a writing requirement, you can apply to med school. A lot of premeds major in biology or other science majors, but you really don’t have to. You could major in English, French literature, or electrical engineering if you wanted to as long as you have taken the required premed courses. While it does benefit you if you go to a prestigious university when you apply to medical school, both Michigan and Penn are great places to follow a premed track.

Ya…tho the benefit of attending a “top” school is very minimal at least superficially. I mean med schools wont usually look at your app and say “oh wow that kid went to UPenn, hes totally in.” Rather, going to an Ivy will help your app to med schools because it will (in theory) give you more opportunity to learn and exploit resources that you may not have available to you at your local state school.

im sorry, but how is that related at all to the subject of this thread?
