I heard from someone today that demonstrated interest plays a huge part in admissions at Wash U. Can anyone confirm this? In the past, I've emailed and called requesting a Wash U DVD. I also attended the meeting when a rep came to my school.

For those of you who have gotten in at some point - do you remember what you did? I don't really just want to do something for the sake of doing it but I could always use more information on the school.

Do you have any other suggestions to effectively demonstrate interest?

My son was admitted last year (but went elsewhere). He did visit a couple of times, and that probably was necessary for him, since we live just a couple of hours away, and if you don't visit under those circumstances, they figure you really are not serious.

There is a new engineering dean. Evidently she made some quite precipitous changes to the undergraduate program, including eliminating majors even for students who were still enrolled. I understand she has some faculty perturbed at her, but I don't know all the reasons.

I visited the summer before applying and also applied to two of the merit scholarship programs (didn't get either). I was accepted, but ended up going elsewhere.

re post # 8: I'm not in a position to say whether or not the reputed "turmoil" is affecting students, except to say don't plan to major in aeronautical engineering--it is now an area of concentration in mechanical rather than a major. Rumor has it there have been other changes, but I don't know any details at all. Try to make contact with current students.
