Anything about taft?

I feel the same way. My daughter felt right at home at the school. The academics are hard - a shock coming from her local “college prep” high school so when she was beginning to feel the stress of being new, making friends and adjusting the staff jumped right on it. In fact, the faculty meet periodically to discuss the students so that everyone knows who is adjusting, who is eating (or not eating), who is getting along with their roommate, etc.

My husband and I call it Hogwarts because it feels like that when you’re walking the hallways. It’s not a perfect fit for everyone - so the answer will depend on who you ask - but the staff seem to really REALLY like kids there and we quizzed an outgoing senior and a few juniors who confirmed it.

My D says that all the classes are mostly in the same building - it’s sometimes takes a jog to get to the science and math building between classes and you will lose weight hiking up to the gym. But I knew she had found her fit when she slipped and started calling it “home” over first extended visit home.

So it comes down to which personality of schools fits your specific child? Lawrenceville is completely different. Lawrenceville is probably more like Princeton and Taft is probably more like Yale in terms of style and personality.

Do you mind elaborating on their differences in style in personality?

Those are my top two schools I am choosing between.

I’m considering applying for the 2013-2014 cycle, but Taft seems to have a somewhat conservative reputation. Can any of you express your thoughts on whether that is true or not. I’m a guy and I am very dedicated to theatre. I march to the beat of my own drum and more of a creative, artsy type person. Could this result in social isolation, or are my fears unfounded?

You will know on revisit day. My child revisited both schools and got in the car after Lawrenceville and said I am not going here. I don’t think there was a connection with the school or the revisit guide. Where at Taft there was lunch with a friend and the Varsity lacrosse team.

Taft has many kids who are into the arts. My child has a good friend who is in all the plays and the singing groups. You can be whoever you want at Taft and no one will judge you. It is not as artsy as a school like Choate but it has a good mix of artsy and sporty kids. Actually this years Freshman girls class is known as a non sporty group.
