Anything about Taft

Hi! So I don’t really see many threads about Taft on here, and during the application process I usually had to piggyback off of other boarding school threads, so I thought it’d be nice to make a thread for Taft. Anyone with Taft knowledge is welcome to answer- not just me.

My daughter is applying for tenth grade. We are heading there for an interview. We visited this summer and were really impressed by the campus and quality of the science posters. How difficult is it to get in as a tenth grader? How is the social life there?

@MakMacdonald I might see you guys! I’m a tour guide. To answer your question, I wouldn’t really know, because I applied as a ninth grader. The social life is really good, and you always have things that you can do. Sometimes they are impromptu dances in the black box which is really fun, or glow in the dark mini golf, etc. I’m at home for long weekend, but there was a trip to NYC and to the “good” mall for people who stayed on campus.

I am applying to Taft, but have heard mixed reviews. How has your experience been with social life, workload, the school in general? I would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks!

I was gong to ask the same questions. How about weekend activities? Dress code for girls and what do they typically wear to class?

@LaxPrep The school in general is amazing, and a perfect fit for me. Personally, I’ve been taking a break from the social scene (much to my friends’ dismay) because I was so active in the first couple of months and now I need time to myself. If you mean homework by workload, it truly varies from day to day. One night I was swamped with homework (in hindsight, I could’ve managed my time better) and stayed up until 11, and started it around 7:30. The next night, all I had to do was read a two paragraph text for History. If you manage your time right, you should be fine. About social life, there is always something to do, especially during the first month of school. Sundays are truly the only day you have nothing to do, so most just relax. Hope that answers your questions!

As stated in my previous comment, there’s almost always something to do on the weekends. Last weekend was Hotchkiss Day and afterwards we had a feed and watched a movie in the auditorium. The weekend before that we had laser tag. The school mons really try hard to make sure that not only are there things to do, but they’re fun as well. You’re really lucky if you’re a girl at Taft. The dress code for girl is more relaxed than it is for boys. I don’t know the dress code exactly, but basically no blue jeans or t-shirts. In early fall the girls typically wore shirtdresses and white converse, but now it’s getting colder so they typically wear riding boots, a thin jacket, loose blouse, and black jeans.
