anything from rhodes?

hi -

I'm a RD applicant eagerly awaiting my decision...does anybody know when they get sent out? Is it earlier than Apr. 1? And what does the acceptance envelope look like?

Thanks!

Hello the Hyacinthgirl! I am really not sure when the RD acceptance date is. I only know two who applied this year, S and his GF, and they both applied for merit $, so their decisions came early. Keep us informed, and I wish you the best!

I got my RD acceptance today, but I will most likely not go. Rhodes has been off my list for quite some time, surprisingly in its place are two state schools, one in-state and one out-of-state that I really didn't think much of two months ago. I never would've thought that I'd be choosing between 2 state schools over Rhodes and Sewanee (the two at the top of my list to start the year). Don't get me wrong, I loved Rhodes when I visited, it's just not for me anymore.

hey, i just got in too! plus the rhodes award, $7,000/year. sweet :)

zsal - is there any particular reason you took rhodes off your list? I haven't visited yet ( i will in april) but i was attracted to it because of its seemingly great academics and professors, intellectual atmosphere, beautiful campus, surrounding area, etc. would you disagree with any of that?

thanks!

Congratulations Hyacinth and zsal!

Hyacinth and zsal,

Congrats from me, too! I'd love to hear any thoughts either of you have about your impressions of Rhodes!

theHyacinthgirl, I wouldn't disagree with any of that about Rhodes. The campus and surrounding area is beautiful and the academics are top notch. I've taken it off my list mostly due to location (7 hours away) and the small size. I applied to several schools of Rhodes' size, and nearly every school I applied to was a liberal arts school (Sewanee, Kenyon, Transylvania, and Hanover) but I also applied to two large state universities, University of Kentucky and Miami University (Ohio). When I first began looking at and then applying to schools I thought I really wanted a small school but just applied to the others just in case I changed my mind. It's a good thing I did because as time came closer to make my decision, I changed my mind. I was afraid of a place being too big like I had heard many people say about UK, but after my first visit there just last weekend, it changed my mind. I've decided to take up their offer on the Honors program and a completely full ride. The social scene there added in with a strong academic program as well as priority class registration with the Honors program (I already have my fall schedule made and it's only March) and its location (downtown Lexington, KY with plenty of off-campus internship possibilities and an excellent college scene) made it the right fit for me. I realized I needed a big school. Rhodes is an amazing school and up until a few months ago, I would've been ready to pack my bags and move to Memphis, but I guess things just come up and you never know what may happen. If you are looking for a strong liberal arts school in one of the nation's most interesting cities, go for Rhodes, I don't think you'll regret your decision at all. It's just not the right place for me.

zsal - thanks so much. I really think I'll be more certain about Rhodes after I've visted. I know waht you mean about being hesitant to be far away...I live in MA, and no one here has heard of Rhodes. I do have some extended family in Memphis, though, and I love everything that I've heard about it.

thanks again, and best of luck next year!

zsal and theHyacinthgirl, congratulations to you both! What an exciting time.

zsal, that's wonderful news about your full ride to UK. I was born and raised in Kentucky, so Wildcat blue was a big part of my life for a while. My cousin, who is quite a bit younger than I, graduated from UK just two years ago and she absolutely loved it. She bought a house in Lexington and couldn't be happier.

theHyacinthgirl, we visited Rhodes several months ago and D loved it. It's at the top of her list. We still have several visits to other schools, but Rhodes seems to be a good fit for her. Congratulations on your Rhodes Award!
