for sure .

Hi

Well, in terms of education, it’s an excellent school. Like someone said before me, even if you are a super easy major, you will have an excellent faculty. Some might be too busy and do not care about you. But some do actually care about their undergraduate students. And yes, you will get a social life. People are not extremely competitive as they are usually described to be.

Hm… that’s the good parts. And here goes the negatives.
Overall, after my years in Berkeley, despite some of the good things I’ve noticed about this campus, I came to a conclusion that I hate Berkely. You will smell LOTS of people smoking–tobacco or pots, and the telegraph avenue is always filthy. Nothing seems to be organized and there are bums everywhere!!!
I literally feel like I am aging faster because of Berkeley’s filthy environment. Researchers found that if you are in more clean environment with lots of pine trees, your brain works faster and you age slowly. I feel so dirty here. Ugh.

^ that’s why you should live on north side ;]

wish i knew before i signed up for my apt contract. ugh.

Worse place ever!! Thank god I’m graduating out of this hell hole!!

Before making any decision, definitely VISIT the campus and have a feel for yourself.
I have always heard how UCB is like anti-social, no life, …all kind of those things and somehow, in my mind builds up some kind of “Hate UCB Love UCLA”.
However, I end up going to Berkeley City College (right accross UCB) before transferring so I really know the environment around UCB and hang out with some UCB students I know.
I love it ! I’m really like wow…why is UCB has such a bad social reputation ?

UCLA has always been my dream school…but never visit it…hopefully will visit it soon to see if it’s really as good as it sounds.

Visit before deciding ! :)

I went to Cal a long time ago, but I do know that some things have not changed. Cal is not anti-social, but it is what you make of it. While I was there the saying went “study hard and party hardy” and most students lived up to that. The Cal-Stanford rivalry is big on campus and makes for some fun times.

Cal is in the middle of a big diverse/liberal city and it looks like it. But the opportunities to go to cultural performances in Oakland, San Francisco and even on campus at Zellerbach are outstanding. I had a wonderful education and experience at Cal and would love for my kids to attend.

ha dude if you dont like competition then why would you want to go to Berk? It’s a great school because the students who get accepted (for the most part) want to succeed in life…AKA they’re in the kitchen because they can take the heat. thats like saying “I want to be a pro soccer player except i dont want to run”…

if your concerened about being surrounded by ugly people…then really? Go to Chico or UC Santa Barbara or something. if that seriously influences your choice of education then maybe you shouldnt go to Berkley…

While coming to this school directly from High School may be intimidating and require an adjustment from the comforts of the suburbs, this town is one of the best places to live in the world. People from all corners of the world are everywhere, wanna hear the low-down on the latest election in Burma, just ask someone from there!!! Great courses in EVERY department, check. Lots of other smart people with whom you can work/play. Close to San Fran!!! The list goes on and on, but I can’t b/c I’ve got projects to finish. Oh yeah, projects that I get to decide on/design and actually explore my interests while learning the course material. If you want to be fed equations like in HS then don’t come to a school that builds leaders.

we make youtube videos for class projects…

depends on what you are looking for?? I was raised near the campus. ULTRA competitive, you will not get classes you want until your Junior year! CUTBACKS, CUTBACKS, CUTBACKS! Will take more than 4 years to get undergrad degree because only upperclassmen get the classes they need and want. Non English speaking TA’s are your professors in a lecture hall of 150 students. No community connection at all. The surrounding community is DIRTY! Crime, Lots of POT Smoking, dirty hippies. Again, it just depends on what you are looking for. Some people like the large, chaotic and diverse campus. Personally, Its WAY OVERRATED!

you gotta absolutely love berkeley. the life here is something you can’t get anywhere else. the mixture of people, academics, hobos (who most are really really cool people). you’ll fall in love with the campus and the city

wear a Stanford sweater to improve your social life by 10 points.

^^ Lol that’d be funny

if you’re picking your university based on the looks of girls, then you’ve a sad life ahead of you. After singing Berkeley’s praises once I got in, I’ve now decided it’s not all its cracked up to be. This is for two main reason: state funded meaning NO funds, too hard to get classes you need meaning it will take beyond the normal 2/4 years. I really don’t think Cal deserves the high rating it has after a year here. But, other than that, such a good school with a good world renowned name behind it!

Teamie If you decided to go to Berkeley without the realization that there would be a lot of people smoking pot and a lot of hippies, you’re a moron.

I looked at how CAL is and I feel it is the best fit for me once i transfer out of community college. Good academic accomodations/DSPS program (since I may have to utilize it), prime location near Oakland and San Francsico, good social atmosphere, lots of clubs, lots of organizations, lots of majors to choose from, strong reputation in many ways, fun game days. Everyone yaps about the stereotypical oh, UC Berkeley is full of tree huggin hippies, stoners, potheads, quiet people, boring atmosphere and too competitive academic environment. But I think the strengths definitely outweigh the almost non-apparent weaknesses. I would love to transfer to CAL, but I don’t know if my transferrable GPA will be acceptable for CAL by the time I rack up enough transfer units to go to a 4 year.

So whoever yaps about the stereotypes about CAL need to get a life, PERIOD!

I really want to get into CAL! It’s always been my dream!

UC Berkeley thing going in the bay area . BEAUTIFUL weather . GORGEOUS sunsets . Mostly mellow people . I married an east coast guy and have been a resident of NJ for 25 YEARS . I miss all that is BERKELEY .
