Professional fraternities are a bit different in my limited experience, in that there’s a hell of a lot more peer pressure to study and get good GPAs.

why? do they MAKE u do things that u dont want to do? i don’t get it, why can’t u study as much as u would like? do they come over to ur dorm and kick u out or something?

how did u find out about running for president and stuff? do ppl tell u or do u have to really find things through inside connections?

your RA will tell you.

@Cavilier: So taking a light/easy first semester screws you over? What about if you have credits from some AP classes? (Though, I’m not sure how many of my AP tests Cal would accept and how many of those tests I actually want to use–for example, I want to take Chem even though I passed the AP test.) I was originally planning to do a 13-unit first semester (Chem 1A, Math 1A, and Spanish 12) but according to your suggestions, that’s a bad idea. So should I plan to take another class too? Because I don’t want to do badly my first semester either =(

You should check out this thread.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/576290-bearfacts-telebears-your-class-levels-please-sticky.html

AP credits give you an edge only versus people who have the same level as you. Your level is determined by how many non-AP/IB units you have completed.

0-30 = Freshmen
30-60 = Sophomore
60-90 = Junior
90+ = Senior

This is another reason why 13 units screws you. In order to get to sophomore level before sophomore year, you have to take 17+ units during your second semester at Berkeley.

Of course, one of the worst things you can do is overestimate your abilities and sign up for too many classes. Something you can consider doing if you don’t want to take the risk, but don’t want telebears to screw you is to take a couple classes at community college over the summer. I have a friend who did this. He’s a mediocre student, but he always gets ultra sexy telebears appointment dates which are better than mine.

^sorry, but for a confused admitted student, could someone explain just what telebears is in common speak (lol)? And how one’s number of completed credits affects the dates of their “appointments”?

Telebears is the website everyone uses to register for classes. Students do not get to register for classes at the same time. Instead, the school gives you a date (actually 2 dates. One for each phase) when you may begin registering for classes. How early or late your date compared to other people’s is determined the factors listed in my previous post. Having an earlier date means getting more of the classes your want.

Basically:
More completed units=earlier telebears appointment.

hm… i would say study, the secret to success. I’m serious, there’s tons of students who come here and think they can just cruise and party everyday and look at what happens to them. ever notice why there are so many bums around berkeley?

Haha, I’m now tempted to take some CC courses myself before I start school.

Congrats on getting the A’s icesplendor. That’s a pretty crazy achievement especially since you’re in CoC.

lol man i think from all ive been hearing, ill HAVE to study. for those who tend to party and all that though, just curious…what kinds of grades do they get? is it possible to pull of a C for them or do they go straight to D’s and F’s? If you study, especially in science classes, are they so tricky that u can’t get an A? or what types of grades do ppl get there?

for instance, in my ap classes in hs, if u study u can get an A or B. And in my college courses in community college, usually an A. however i got a B- in a calculus class at a CSU.

Well, berry, this is what I got from this thread so far:
Study hard.
Have an easy 1st semester freshman year.
Take classes at CC over summer for an ultra sexy telebears appointment

What are you majoring in again berry?

Nobody actually gets Ds and Fs, not regularly at least. I party and all my friends party at least once every weekend and most of us are doing fine.

you can party 3 days a week if you want to, as long as you spend sufficient time studying when you need to (midterms week).

i’m a hard science major, and in one of my semesters, I had all my midterms in roughly one week’s time for each cycle so i went out atleast twice a week, not including gamedays.

its managable, as long as you know how to budget your time correctly. partying the weekend before exams should be limited to probably once, but only if its on a thurs/fri the following week. if you’ve got an exam monday or tuesday, i don’t recommend going out at all. hit the stacks instead.

okay that’s good. where do people “party” if you can’t go to clubs and all that? does this include dancing to good subwoofer music or just like drinking/smoking and hanging out?

Here’s a useful website you can use to plan your schedule.
http://esc.frozeninflames.net/

As for grades, even in the so called “weeder” classes, it’s not really possible to get a D or an F if you make an effort. There is only one class that I would really consider a weeder, and that is CS 61C.

Cavilier, thanks for all your help! I think I’ll go ahead and sign up for more than 13 units then.
However, this leads me to another question. How hard is it to get the class you want? For example, I had a hard time finding another class that I can fit in that wouldn’t conflict with the classes I already wanted (Math1A, Chem1A, Spanish). And the one I found has a limit of 25 students or something like that. Would it be hard for me to make sure I get this class? Or am I worrying too much about this? thanks :)

-fraternities / sorority invites (a lot easier if you’re in the scene)
-bars for the 21+ or those with good fakes (mostly kips, sometimes blakes)
-bear’s lair again for the 21+
-sf (big issue is transportation. its easy enough to get there, but getting back late at night is tough)
-club/party events
just as sororities have invites in the city, lots of organizations will hold these sort of things as well either locally (blake’s basement) or in the city. they usually cost anywhere from $5-20, depending on a lot of things. i went to one at blake’s and it was okay. however, i once went to an event that had chartered buses to sf which was really cool. (this was outside of the greek scene, in which invites do this all the time, and they’re a lot of fun!)

if you know where to look, there is always something to do over the weekends. the more connected you get, the more you’ll hear about and can go to. pm me if you’ve got more questions!
