We will be flying to ABQ for a UNM visit this coming week. Is there anything we need to be sure and check out while we are there? Anything the official tour may leave out that we should really know about?

We flew in last week, did the tour and spent 8 hours there with nary a rest. We liked the school (d has a scholarship) and she will go there in the Fall. How did you find the school?

ABBeachMom,

Where does your son/daughter go to school. I’m assuming Fletcher, most likely… I have a really good friend who’s going to UNM this fall. I live in Jax Beach but we both go to school in St. Augustine. My friends fell in love with the school. New Mexico is a huge transition from Florida so she must have really liked it. It’s neat to see someone else in the area is going.

My son is going to UNM on a scholarship also, littlemama, but doesn’t know another person going there. I haven’t visited myself. S went on visit with DH. I am praying he will make new friends easily. He’s also in the Honors College.

Any advice?

How is eveybody getting everything needed for the dorm to unm?

We live in Florida.

I live in ABQ and have a D who’s attending UNM.

I can answer any questions you might have about the school and the city. (Lived here for almost 29 years now!)

Younger D is attending school in upstate NY so I can sympathize with the cross country move issue. I shipped most of D’s clothes via FedEx or UPS to her mailbox before school started. Also ordered stuff like bedding and had it shipped directly to the school PO box. Carried critical stuff like her computer, saxophone, etc.

There is a Target and a WalMart near campus. Also a Bed, Bath & Beyond on the northeast side of town. I can give directions.

The minute we set foot on the UNM campus, my son & I simultaneously had that AHH-HA moment everyone talks about (you know, when the Michelangelo sunbeams suddenly appear and the Hallelujah chorus plays) when you just know “THIS IS IT.” I am so glad J.D. Shaw, French Horn player/teacher extraordinaire, left the Frost School of Music for the UNM Music School. My son is now happily attending UNM as a music performance major. He has scholarships and is in the Honors program and the Marching Band and gets along great with his roomate and is getting great grades (so far) and is LOVING UNM!!! In answer to a post from a few months ago, he attended Douglas Anderson School of the Arts rather than Fletcher.

So, has your son discovered the yummy cinnamon rolls at the Frontier (across the street from campus)? How about developed a serious green chile cheeseburger addiction yet?

Glad your son is loving UNM. The school is seriously underrated.
