i applied to william and mary RD and just want to get a better feel for the school. comments, anyone? academics, social life, weather...

should i, if accepted, go there b/c they have irresistable yummy cookies or not go there b/c you can get swallowed by the earth.

please feel free to be random :)

i applied RD also. sorry that i have nothing to offer. i just wanna say that this is a great idea for a topic.

we have irresistable tri-cornered hats, those are better than cookies anyway. Just kidding, but the tri-cornered hats are not far away!

The food is really not that bad, I would rate it better than some of my friends rate the food at their schools. However, that said, it is the "school food" every day (unless you go out, there are nice cheap-ish place right near cmapus), but the "school food every day" dilema will happen at any school.

Social life? hrm... W&M has the reputation of a non existant social life. That said, there are parties practically every night of the week if you know where to look. The frats are always going on the weekends, and student apartments have parties too. I haven't really tested the party scene much, b/c I'm the kind of person who would rather stay in and chill with the people in the dorm.

Students are very accepting, though 80% white, which was a change for me, coming from a 50% white HS.

Here's a quote from one student: "The vibe of the school is moderation—moderate parties, moderate political rallies, moderate clothing styles and behavior."

We're like 1 hr from Virginia Beach, though I suppose an unimpressive beach if you're coming from Hawaii, lol. 45 minutes to Richmond, 2.5-3 hours to Washington, DC.

The Campus, is 2nd to none in terms of beauty.

W&M is sometimes referred to as "the academic boot camp of the east coast." If you get an 'A' at WM, you earned it, they are fairly hard to come by, as opposed to 40%+ of the grades at many Ivies are an 'A'. If you're looking for a 4.0, you'd have better luck in the northeast. They honored all the 4.0 students at graduation in the spring, and there were 2 of them.

Some offer the catch phrase: "William and Mary, where your best hasn't been good enough since 1693."

AND, I am laughing at all my friends who start classes in 3 days on Monday, while ours don't start till the 19th =P.

I'll drop back by here from time to time... this board is kinda dead. You can reach me at kdbarr AT wm DOT edu, if you have any questions, and I'll do my best to answer =). Though I can't garuntee checking it everyday while I'm home, because I have to use the web interface... back at school my email is always running.

I have a friend at Hawaii Pacific... I just mentioned that cuz it says you're from Hawaii, lol.

when i hear of schools with massive amounts of work that students say kills them, im not sure how to take that. that can be coming from someone who didnt have a very difficult h.s. experience. i think its all relative to ur hs. not too be conceded or anything, my hs was extremely difficult where the automatic/most basic class was considered honors level at other schools. so im not sure if to expect a college workload thats a lot harder than that, or one that isnt that much harder for me, but much harder to some1 who didnt have to work as hard in h.s.

we all gor, was the amount of work directed at me? I can tell you that my workload first semester (18 credits, taken against all advice given to me), was significantly less than my workload jr and sr year of HS. That said, my gpa was also significantly lower.

The workload is not insane by any means (IMO), but I agree this will be decided by what you did in high school. But even though it is less work, it is unrealistic to think you will be able to maintain the same GPA. (average entering gpa is 4.0 (at least that's the reported #), freshman year 20% get 3.5+)

W&M is rigorous but not impossible. A lot depends on the major and courses you choose. You are right, HS prep. figures into the equation but I think W&M students really challenge themselves which is why many W&M students feel this way. Lord knows W&M is known nationwide for grade deflation.

Furthermore, if you want a free ride, PLEASE, W&M doesn't want you anyway. Maybe another school would be a better choice.
