AP and IB

Which of the two (Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate) would impress college adcomes more?
Because Sophomore year I will take 2 AP's, but am planning on taking ALL IB in my Junior and Senior year.

Trust me, IB may be impressive but it sucks hard

IB makes you jump through hoops and at the end you get like 1/2 the college credit APer's get.

What do you mean, "jump through hoops"?
I'm taking the 2 AP's Sophomore year because AP at my school is mandatory.

IB is usually considered more rigorous. However, AP is much more flexible, has no requirements for the program, and allows you to take as many or as few classes as you want. Colleges in America are impressed by an IB diploma, but as AP is more traditionally recognized in America, a certain amount of AP courses is generally regarded in America to be better than an equal amount of IB courses. Colleges will also usually give fewer credits for IB classes.

Yeah, IB is probably more rigorous but it's a good preparation. I honestly don't think it's that bad and I'm taking all IB classess.

I would say IB is overall harder, but it's harder o get college credit from it.

If IB is harder, how come it's more difficult to get college credit?

because there's standard level and higher level. Only higher level IB exams get you credit for a course, but in IB you need to take TOK, do CAS hours, and doan extended essay. In AP, you only need 1 year and the AP exam will get you credit.

You can always take the AP exam that corresponds to the IB class you are taking, if you're concerned about credit.

^^^ The above is very true. In fact, this is standard procedure at my school. While for some classes, this is taken into account, and the class is geared also toward the AP, for many classes, the teacher teaches only toward IB, then says "If you're good at this class, study blahblahblah on your own, and you'll be ready to take the AP test", and we are. So it's definitely doable.

"If IB is harder, how come it's more difficult to get college credit?"

This makes alot of sense. IB students usually refer to their courses as "harder" although they receive THE SAME points as AP courses. In my opinion, they are both extremely rigorous. However, when they say the IB program is "prestigious" they are right- it is- in Europe and Asia. In America, it doesn't count much and there are even some websites that refer to the IB program as unAmerican.

Personally, I had the choice of either all IB or all AP. I went for all AP because you know what? Even though the IB kids in my school brag about the program not ONE of them gets into an ivy league.

As opposed to the AP kids who do. :)

ah i see, thanks
I don't know if they offer full AP at my school though.
But I'm still going full IB.

wow IB sounds complicated o.O
kinda glad my school only offers AP
hehe

IB scores are released tomorrow...anyone else nervous?

Oh gosh I typed in my PIN number wrong trying to log on to the IB results page and now it froze my account! So apparently I have to contact the IB coordinator at my school. Unfortunately, he quit at the end of last year so we don't even have a coordinator now so I'm really nervous about when I'm ever going to get my scores!

IB classes, individually compared to their respective AP classes, are significantly easier. It's just that the obligation to do the entire IB diploma, including CAS (up to 150 hours of community service), Extended Essay, and TOK and a bunch of other things make it very tedious as comparead to AP which gives you a lot of room to decide things on your own.

hahaha, i take ib. it is comlplete BS. for those who are also taking IB and say that it is hard...I have no idea what you guys are talking about. we have like no homework, just a couple of papers to write, some volunteer work/CAS (which I do already on a normal day basis anyways), an extended essay (4,000 words, yes, but at our school we have the whole summer and some senior year to write it)....idk, i can't think of anythign else that might be potentially challenging. in conclusion to my rant, IB is complete BS. no extra work needed and you will still be fine.

but i must admit, IB is so beurocratic that all the dang paper work gets tedious and VERY annoying.

Like anything else, IB programs may vary from school to school, just as AP programs do. Either can be very rigorous. Colleges will know whether the particular program you are coming from is rigorous or not.
IB is more of a unified curriculum, with requirements beyond the courses themselves, and so it might be considered more demanding even if the courses were essentially the same.

actually jshi, i was surprised on the exams there was hardly any paperwork compared to AP exams.

IB is really respected....the princeton rep that came to our school said that they REALLY take it into account in decisions because of its rigorousness
