I'm taking AP Art History online (starting monday or next) and was wondering if it is a good idea. Many people put it under their "hardest AP" sections which is kinda frightening me. If someone could give me a breif of how the course's workload and difficulty is (Ex. essays, tests, etc.). Thanks.

It was the easiest AP to me, hands down... then again, I'm a huge art buff (that is, I enjoy studying it) and I just returned from a tour of European Art Museums....

The MC has four answer choices instead of the usual five, making it significantly easier (imo). Then again, there is a harsher guessing penalty - 1/3 point deduction for each wrong answer. The MC sections are generally rather long, with a few slide-based MC sets (usually around 30) and then a much longer MC section - it adds up to around 115 questions, irrc. This should be the least of your concerns, however. Although the length of this section might seem intimidating, it's very easy to manage. The harder section is the Free Response portion, where you'll get SEVERAL questions- you start and finish with 30 minute essays which are usually rather vague and cover themes within art and then you'll have a series of five and ten minute slide- and text-based essays. They are definitely easy to handle - don't fret. If you have an interest in art, it's not difficult at all. I've taken AP courses online (Macroeconomics and US Gov) and managed to do just fine and I'm not exactly a child prodigy. Stay focused and pick up a good review book (I can provide recs if you PM me) and you'll be just fine. Like I said, out of the 9 AP courses I've taken, this was certainly the easiest.

BTW, where are you taking the course online?

Swim2daend - How do you take an AP course online? Just wondering.
I believe that the AP Art History exam is challenging. Based upon discussions on CC and my own experience you will want to have the following:
. The Released 2004 Exam - go to the College Board store
. A copy of the AP Art History "Acorn Book" - also available at the College Board Store
. One of the following texts: Gardner (the choice of most teachers and students) Janson, or Stokestad
. The REA Review Book entitled AP Art History - available at Amazon
. The Annotated Mona Lisa and the Annotated Arch
A Few Tips:
. Remember that Ancient Egypt and the Ancient Near East count as Beyond the European Experience topics
. The test is 25 percent sculpture, 25 percent architecture, and 50 percent paintings
Good luck!

Thanks for the responses!!! I'm taking it on flvs. It's avaliable for every student in florida and it's free. Anyone else??

It is a LOT of material and cannot be crammed but it isn't overly difficult. If you have any interest in art it makes the class significantly easier.

bump.........

I figured you were taking it at FLVS - I've taken several AP courses there. Stay focused, put effort into your work, and take advantage of the free AP reviews FLVS will offer you near exam day. Buying the released exam certainly isn't necessary if you are looking to save money - your FLVS instructors will almost certainly be offering huge samples from previous tests and may even mail you a complete exam towards the end of the course.

AP Art History is 2nd hardest, after Calc BC, at my school. The summer assignment counts for about 25% of the semester grade. Too bad I'm taking both....

Swim2daend - How is the online AP Art History course? What books are you using? Do you have homework? What are you currently studying? How are you graded? Thanks.

took it last year. had a good teacher. thought that the test was teh EASIEST i've ever taken. thought that the ap test was easier than some of my in-class tests. just study flashcards and you'll do fine.

My actual Art History class was a joke, for the most part- rarely did we have homework. People took it just to have an AP under their belts. However, my teacher was passionate about it and really got into it if you asked him questions. With the REA AP Art History book, a good text like Gardner's, and an ability to figure out characteristics of different artists/styles/civilizations, it's very doable. I got a 5.

Gardner's is the most boring textbook ever written on the face of this earth.

how generous is the curve by the way?

"Gardner's is the most boring textbook ever written on the face of this earth."

True dat. It's handy when it comes to the actual lives of artists and stuff, though.

AP Art History is the second easiest AP at my school after AP Euro.

I go to a highly competitive public school in SoCal. The school has about 23 APs total.

I’ve never taken an art class before. Is it easy enough to pick up if I’m good at history?
