Hey everyone. Let's use this thread to help us study for the AP Art History Exam. I'll post a question and someone answer and then post another question. Try to leave them open-ended so there can be some explanation and elaboration. I'll start:

Compare and contrast the MET kouros and the Boxer. What styles do each of these statues illustrate and how do they differ?

(I have no idea *** a "MET" korous is, I'm expecting you're talking about a korous statue)

A Kourous statue of a naked young male is characteristic to Archaic Greece while The Boxer is more from Hellenistic Greece. Kourous statues were stiff in pose and not very realistic. The body proportions and facial features are not accurate. They were inspired by the Egyptians. The Boxer shows a boxer after a fight leaning over and in deep thought. This piece characterizes a time where sculpture was changing from the Classical era of ideal forms to the Hellenistic era of emotion and thought. The Boxer, unlike kouros sculptures, is very realistic in proportion, form, and detail.

Ink has been a very popular medium thoughout history. Identify one specific artwork and discuss how the artist uses ink.

Durer's Fall of Man was an engraving that utilized ink through engraving. Durer's engraving shows the Northern Renaissance attention to naturalism and detail in his depiction of animals and plantlife. At the same time, Durer depicted Adam and Eve with classical body types of Roman statues because he was influenced by his trips to Italy. He was the first Northern Renaissance artist to synthesize the artistic developments of the Italian and Northern Renaissance. Using great cross-hatching Durer used ink to create fine gradations between light and shadow, which enhances the naturalism of the bodies of Adam and Eve, as well as the surrounding animals, and landscape.

Explain why the work of Bosch is considered as an influence on the Surrealists.
