AP Art History WITH no Art Experience.(Valedictorian) >.>

Hey guys I am in a sort of dilemma.
So the problem is that i am a current junior and have short listed a few college programs i wanted to apply in. Now i saw that the program says that one unit of fine art is required and i haven’t taken any as i have been too busy with a ton of AP sciences and maths lol. So now i can take AP ART HISTORY senior year however I am afraid that because i have no experience in drawing or art in general i don’t want to get a B or something because that might mess up my 4 years of hard work and my GPA hence moving my rank down. IDK what to do and I am confused BUT I do know that I am good at history classes in general Like APUSH and I am willing to put in the work and the effort for the A but being so unfamiliar with ART i am not sure anymore of what to do. PLEASE HELP AND PROVIDE ANY ADVICE.

Art History has nothing to do with drawing or being good at art. It’s analysis and, from what I’ve heard, among the easier of the APs. I’m actually surprised they count it as a fine art at your school, but then again I suppose it’s similar to music theory in many respects (i.e., composition, analysis, etc.)

Don’t you need any fine art classes as graduation requirement? You don’t want to take any fine art/music class instead of AP Art History for enrichment? It will give your transcript more dimention and you look more interesting. But it’s just my opinion. If you insist on AP Art History, that’s fine. Like the above post says, you don’t need any experience in art to study Art History. Basically it is a history class focused on art. Good luck.

Which college is it that requires " one unit of fine art"? Is it an art school? That doesn’t seem to jibe with having “no experience with art in general”.

@momrath‌ A lot of schools recommend a fine arts unit for admission, but the UC system requires one (just naming one off the bat).

Interesting, thanks @guineagirl96. I see that the UCs require one course in “visual and performing arts.” Is art history considered a fine art or visual art? If yes, and that’s what you need OP, then take art history. It’s about looking at, understanding and analyzing art, not making art. You’ll be fine.

I guess you are OOS because instate this would be part of curriculum.

The UCs require one unit which is equivalent to a full year of arts or you can read the page for the equivalencies. I think it is absurd that you are worried about one B on your transcript. Colleges appreciate risk takers, you can always explain a B as exploring outside your core competencies. I don’t know why you would get a B anyway if you did the work.
