I'll be taking AP Art History next year, but I've heard a lot of people say that admissions offficers look upon it as a "fluff" AP course and not a very challenging class. Since most people who've actually taken the class find it somewhat challenging and the test to be one of the fairly difficult AP exams, I was wondering if this is true.

I'm going to take the class anyway, but I was just wondering if it does come off as an "easy" class.

I actually thought the class and the AP test were the easiest that I took out of all AP classes. Probably because it really, really interested me! I’d say yes, it does come off as an “easy” class but a fair bit of studying and memorizing will be required.

Still, my favorite high school class, and this is from someone who used to have absolutely no interest in art. I highly recommend it. I learned SO MUCH.

As for college admissions, who cares? If it’s a class that you enjoy and want to take, TAKE IT, and don’t worry. I guarantee you will not get rejected just because you decided to take art history.

I’ve taken 7 AP classes and it was my most difficult one by far. I don’t yet know what I scored on the AP test, but I thought it was very difficult. I was one of only 3 students to get an A, and I got an A-. I hope schools don’t look at this class as a fluff AP class. It was so much harder than AP Chem (almost everyone got an A in that class).

AP Art History is a great course and fulfills the UC VAPA requirement, with bonus point. Yes, it’s a so-called AP Lite, as are a bunch of them, so it’ll be veiwed by adcoms in that manner. However, it should not be taken in lieu of an academic history course (Euro, US, etc.) The test itself has gotten harder over the past few years as the % who earn fives has gone down significantly. OTOH, there is now a study guide for the exam (REA).

it all depends on the teacher. some of my friends from other schools say it’s as easy as regular classes. but at my school, it actually required a lot of studying. yes, it is one of the easier ap classes, but if it’s taught right, the level of the material should still be college level and require somewhat of a challenging work. i took it this year and loved it.

Just because it may be considered an “AP lite” doesn’t mean you should take it, ESPECIALLY if you are interested in art. In fact, if you are planning to highlight your achievements or interests in art, AP Art History would be the class to take rather than other non-art AP courses.

While I’m not a college admissions officer, I feel strongly that they are aware of the intensity of this class and the commitment it takes to succeed in it. In general, AP Art History students are expected to start preparations for this course in the summer prior to taking it – for any AP class, this is an unusual request.

Studying the history of famous artwork is a sure-fired way of getting a global perspective on history and politics – and the creation of art. Take it!

Not in our district, which starts school after Labor Day. ALL AP courses but Stats require summer self-work, usually 3-5 chapters of text, or a couple of novels (AP Lit). All are tested the first week of class.

both my kids took Art History as Sophs and really enjoyed it, even tho it was a lot of work.
