Should I take AP Art if I don't plan on being an art major but am a talented artist?

Basically I'd work on independent artwork all year, put in together as a portfolio, and that would be graded for an AP score. I can do it, and if I don't take AP Art I'll get stuck in Art II, which is another year of making black-paper collages and drawing flowers. But my counselor is obsessed with the fact that I don't need it because I won't be an art major.

And how would UChicago or other such universities look at an AP art score or portfolio for an intended medical or engineering major?

I am currently taking AP Art, and I am thinking of being a biochem. major
definitely not an art major
but i think taking AP Art is a good idea because:
1. It shows colleges that your seriuous about art, and that you are interested in things other than your intended major
2. it really helps you develope your skills & also become more independent in your artwork
3. Someone in my AP Art class was just accepted to UChicago

I sent part of my portfolio to schools even though i am not an art major
i would definitely reccomend this class, assuming you have the time
it requires a lot more work than your typical art class

I'm going into computer engineering next year, but I'm taking AP Studio Art. I've taken art for 6 years in school, and love it- why would I pass up the highest level class?

I didn't really worry how it would look to colleges- it's not going to make me look bad, and if it helps, then great. It may help to show that I'm dedicated to my extra curricular activities or something, maybe not.

Do what you enjoy. That's what all college admissions officers say, and I'm taking them at their word.

i just dropped AP studio art this semester. As much as i love art, i need to focus on my other AP's. if you like art and have time for it then take it. i don't think it's going to affect your admissions chances much.

My d's school has lots of kids in AP art that aren't going to be art majors. Had a family friend get into an ivy league school in a technical major.. his family thinks the fact that he had a great art portfolio is what set him apart from other applicants..You have to theme your art portfolio in AP art..you could tie your theme to your intended major.. which could be really interesting.
