Hi! So I’m really worried about next year, my junior year in high school… I’m planning on taking ap bio and ap chem the same year, and everybody is calling me crazy and suicidal. My schedule won’t be that bad, I think:
PE
Ap Bio
Ap Chem
Music
Honors Pre Calculus
English
Bible
But the thing is, I’m really involved in school. I’m the president of my class, co editor in chief for the school yearbook, I run on the Cross Country team during the fall, and I play on the Basketball team during the winter (which has many games and tournaments). Everybody I’ve spoken to believes I have the capacity to do it, including the ap sciences teacher, but I’m having doubts in myself. I’ve taken regular bio and chem and have gotten A’s on both. Throughout my whole school experience I’ve always gotten nothing less than straight A’s, but if anything, this worries me more because I have expectations to live up to.
I’m hoping anyone who’s taken the classes either seperately or even simultaneously could please give me some advice on whether or not I should go through with this schedule… Is my plan really crazy, or is it possible? Any comments are really appreciated! Thanks so much!
It’s fairly common, but to be honest, it is, depending on the school, a time suck. In addition to your regular homework, you will also be spending a fair amount of time writing lab reports. Also, at many schools, the labs are double periods.
That said, the rest of your schedule does not look too bad. If others believe you can handle it, then you probably can. Also note, an A- is not the end of the world.
It’s pretty common, in my junior year I took AP Chem and AP Physics B together in addition to three other AP classes, so I think you’ll be fine. I know quite a few other people who took two or three AP science classes in one year at my school. AP bio is also easier in comparison to chem or physics (at least from my experience). It won’t be easy, you’ll probably have more workload, but if you feel up to challenge, I’d say do it!
I also really enjoyed ap chem and ap bio; they’re both really interesting and have a very rewarding experience.
My junior year schedule was AP Physics C mechanics, AP Physics C E&M, AP Bio, AP Chem, Calc 3, Differential Equations, and English honors. My school pulled me in to speak with not one but all three counselors my school has to spend 30 minutes telling me that I would fail all of my classes. I had a 4.0 before and I still have a 4.0 now and I have gotten 5s on all of the exams. The total workload is much less than most people think because most people don’t know how to organize their time well. The labs for bio and chem are not little 5 minute exercises. They can take anywhere between 30 minutes to a few days, during which you can be working on your lab reports. You will not have the final results yet but the background and procedure and some preliminary data can all be completed during this time. If you can effectively manage your time and plan then the classes wont pose much of a struggle unless you are just bad at the subject. Also there is some slight overlap between them (mainly stuff from chem showing up in cellular or molecular parts of bio) which could b helpful for when you take the AP exams.
