I have the option of taking either AP Bio or AP Chem next year. Which should I take? I'm currently in Honors Chemistry, but I prefer biology. I'll be taking Honors Precalc too, by the way.

AP Chem is more prestigious

What is your intended major? Are you sophomore right now? Whichever AP class you take may also which subject test your will take. That may be critical for your school application depending on your intended major and schools applying.

This schedule is for next year, freshman year. I’d like to do something in the social sciences or humanities so I’m not sure which would look better on a college application. Thanks.

Do you mean you will be HS freshman next year and planning to take either AP class? Or you are a freshman right now? Either way, I would say “wow”.

I will be a HS freshman next year, so I do have the option of taking both and still having time for AP Physics, etc. I’m just wondering which I should take first, because my school considers AP Bio the easier course but I’m in Honors Chem this year.

You should start with an easier AP.

I am currently taking AP Chem (along with Honors Pre-Calc.) It has the reputation for being much more difficult than AP Bio, but don’t let that keep you from taking it. If you are motivated and a high achieving student, then you will be fine. With that said, I think its more important that take the class that you really want to, but AP Chem does tend to look better on college apps, if that means anything to you. If you have at least two years of high school left, I’d say go with AP chem, since you are taking Honors right now. The year after, youcould take AP Bio, because prior Bio knowledge isnt as important for that class.

OP’s question is whether to take AP Bio or AP Chem in his freshman year. It is not about taking either one of them during high school. I assume he/she will take both in different years anyway. So it would be better to start from the easier one first. But make sure to take the other AP classes by junior year if you want to take the subject test before school application.

Even though colleges look at your rigorous classes, they count gpa way more seriously. Ask any of acquaintances from your high school, whether its best to take ap Chem or ap bio. I mean, all classes’ rigor is hugely dependent on teacher’s quality as well. If you want to study humanities or social sciences, the science subjects don’t matter that much. Both ap science classes are nice. Good luck!

Thank you very much everyone! I’ve decided to go with AP Chem.
