AP policies vary greatly from college to college. Some other colleges set strict maximums amounts on the credits you can use, while others do not. Some other colleges give credit for 3s, some for 4s, and some only accept 5s. Some give 2 courses worth of credit for an AP test, while other colleges only give 1. Some other colleges give 2 courses of credit for a 5, and 1 course of credit for a 4. Some other colleges don’t give any credit for certain tests.

UVa mostly accepts 4s, except 5s are needed in some subjects, as you will see in the official link.

When you are deciding upon a college, these policies may have an impact upon your final decision - because it may be the difference between graduating in 3 years from one college or 4 years from another. That can save tens of thousands. However, many UVa students with lots of AP credit choose not to graduate early because they like it so much (particularly if they are not paying full price out-of-state tuition).
