I need to take another AP for senior year. Right now, I'm signed up for AP Gov't and AP Eng Lit and Comp. I've really been feeling the urge to take a third AP, because pretty much all of the people I know are. My school is going to start offering AP Bio next year, and I feel tempted to ask to take it. The problem is though, I don't know if I should. That's why I'm writing this topic. I don't quite have the mind of a scientist, and I take an intermediate level science class as a junior right now. From what I've heard, AP Bio is the easiest AP science. I've read that it's mostly memorization, but I've heard from some people that you have to have a pretty solid chemistry background. If any of you guys could put in some input, I'd appreciate it.

AP Bio is easy, it really is just knowing the systems and parts and how things works in a fact-based kind of way. If you trouble with the chemistry, I would read Introduction to Chemistry for Biology Students by Sackheim (any edition will do). Our teacher had us read it, and though I took ap chem so I didn’t need too much, it was a pretty nice review.

The only thing about AP Bio is that it is an absolute

****LOAD

of reading. Towards the end of the course (February–>early May) you read 10 to 15 pages a night out of the textbook, and you take notes on all of it. Takes for freaking ever, maybe around 3 hours if you concentrate on all of it. It’s not even fun like doing problem sets for chemistry was.

I have taken all of the AP sciences barring Physics C, and whoever told you Bio was the easiest was very misinformed. AP Bio is pure rote memorization, and not very quantitative at all like Chem or Physics, making the class much more boring and difficult. If your school offers it and you want an easy A, Enviro is the way to go.

At least at my school, AP Bio is fun but a ton of work. One of those great teacher, awful class situations. AP Environmental Science, on the other hand, is wicked easy and fun and basically just my freshman year bio class all over again.

Basically, if you want to learn and be secure in getting credit in college, take bio. If you want an easy A and aren’t really worried about getting the hours, APES is where it’s at.

Sadly I am not having a good AP Bio experience. My teacher is horrible and I feel completely unprepared for the test coming up. I don’t know what the teaching situation would be like for you but I would caution you if the teacher sucks.

If you hated Chem, then you’ll love Bio…

Unless you hate all science.

If you’re good at sheer memorization, AP Bio isn’t too tough. There is a lot of material covered in the course, but most of it is fairly easy to learn. As for having a chemistry background, I took AP Bio without taking any sort of chemistry first and had no problems. Anything you would need from chemistry can be learned quickly.

Thanks for the help, guys. Could someone think of something convincing that I could say to my teacher to let me in the class?

one issue is if this teacher has never taught ap bio … you likely won’t do well on the exam… and the exam is changing (2012-13), so it’s sort of a tough time (for your situation) to take it.
