We just had our photosynthesis test. Could somebody tell me if Photosystem II is part of the electron transport chain or if it's considered separate? Logical reasoning and/or a source would be appreciated...
I'm trying to get points on a question I got wrong.

i think that photosystem II expels and electron to supply the electron transport chain so i would say they are seperate. i dont know if that link helps.

what was the question and what was your answer? i love fighting for points with my teachers.

I'm pretty sure they're separate... though I'm not sure I completely understand the question.

Question was:

"Which of the following is characteristic of photosystem II?
1. Electrons from P700 pass via electron transport to NADP+.
2. Electrons from P680 pass via electron transport to P700.
3. Water is split.
4. ATP is made.

a. 1 and 3
b. 2 and 3
c. 1, 3, and 4
d. 1, 2, and 4
e. 2, 3, and 4"

I answered b (2 and 3) because PSII is P680, and it sends electrons to PSI and water is split to give electrons to PSII. I thought, since the electron transport chain is separate, the energy from it used to make ATP would not count as something characteristic of PSII... but my teacher says since PSII passes electrons it's part of the ETC. The textbook never explicitly states anything, but does always refer to them separately... same with websites.

thats the trouble with teachers using book tests. those sort of questions are rather ambiguous. hopefully you didnt lose too may points
