I'm a junior in high school and I'm hoping to apply to CBS at the U of M next year to pursue either Microbiology or Neuroscience. It seems like taking AP Bio in high school is useless for this though because according to the AP credit page at the U's website, the AP Bio exam will only get you credit for Biology 1009. However, the CBS majors don't include this class in the required courses, they include Biology 1001.

It seems to make more sense to take AP Chem in high school which, according to the AP credit page, would give me up to 8 credits. Getting me out of Chemistry 1021 and 1022. Which are both required courses in all the CBS majors.

Is this right?

If you are planning on doing the Biological Sciences Honors Program then DO NOT take AP Bio. because they do not allow any Honors Biology students to receive credit for Bio. because they require that all Honors Biology students start out in the same Biology class.

Hey, thanks a bunch for that information.

Do they have the same rule with AP Chemistry? Or would I be able to get credit for those classes if I do well on the AP test?

I do not know about chemistry, sorry.

However, I would recommend that you take the AP class without testing in it. Because, most of the CBS students will have taken Bio. and you do not want to be behind. If your school requires you to take AP tests if you are taking AP classes then take another Bio. class. I just think that the AP Bio. test itself would not serve much of a purpose.

Call Leah Brus (612) 625-3419 . She is very helpful. If you want good scholarships make sure to do your application for admissions and Honors application as soon as possible. That might mean Aug. if that is even possible. I would def. take AP chem. However, you might want to talk to Leah first. She might even recommend taking AP Bio. I would just do whatever she tells you to do.

Honors app? When I applied I just did the regular application. Was there an Honors app that I missed? Is that why I didn’t get in?

Time is such a fickle thing.
