<p>The rule that the subjunctive is required there is perfectly logical. The College Board was presenting a hypothetical situation, not one that occured in the past as they actually communicated. I had to repeatedly reread the sentence to actually understand what they meant to say.</p>

<p>What are you arguing for? The idea that the College Board should intentionally make errors to seem more human? Grammaticality is no less human than ungrammaticality; in fact, understanding complex grammar is uniquely human.</p>
