AP Biology Lab Questions

I talked with my AP Biology teacher today about taking the AP Bio exam without having taken the class. She said that it will be difficult in the fact that there will be a strong emphasis on the 12 labs of the course, that 2 of the 4 Free Response questions are derived from the labs.

For the people who have taken the AP exam, how strongly are the labs emphasized on the exam?

And do you believe that the lab summaries in CliffsNotes AP Biology + Understanding of the concept will suffice?

listen to your teacher, the labs are pretty important. in fact, they're essential to your grade. I think at least 25% of the questions were lab based, probably more. In addition, at least 1 of the free response questions will be lab based, and the rest will be semi related to the labs.

however that doesn't mean you actually have do the labs and write them up in your lab notebook to get a good score. Cliffs is more than enough. make sure you read each lab carefully, practice the graphing, and be able to reproduce the knowledge. I only did the 1st lab manually and still managed a 5 with Cliffs.

So the multiple choice lab questions were also based on the 12 required labs?

I took IB Biology, not AP Biology, so we didn't do (or even look at) a single one of the 12 labs. However, all of us did well on the AP exam.

The important thing is to be able to design or understand a given lab.

Oh ok, I understand all of those labs, but I think I will get CliffNotes to be on the safe side.

btw, I am taking this exam without taking the class, I may have a chance to take the class in senior year though, if I am able to, should I take the class then even though I have already taken the test?

no...why would you do that.

Because I heard some schools want AP exam score + class to give you credit?

if you are not going to do the labs, you are really putting your grade in geopardy!

"Because I heard some schools want AP exam score + class to give you credit"
il bandito, if you are taking the ap bio exam just for the score (probably for the credit for college I assume?) you can send inthe scores even after you get into the college you want and get credit for it. (are you a senior? ) Also i don't advise you to ignore the labs because I took AP Bio exam and decent amount is emphasized on the labs. Also the materials you study for link with the labs as well. I studied with the cliff notes too, but they generalize the lab a little bit. If you still want to take the test, then try to grasp the critical factors from the lab... so you can actually design a lab too! :)

Yes, I understand how do design a lab. I've also actually thoroughly read the Campbell's VI Edition. I am just wondering if there are like specific knowledge you would only know from doing the labs? Or if already know why if say the temperature increases enough and photosynthesis goes down in a controlled experiment, you'll be fine.

if you think you are ready for it... then feel free to do so. :)
