AP Biology or AP Chemistry for future Computer Science Major?

Would AP Biology or AP Chemistry in high school better prepare me for a Computer Science Major in college? What are the differences in difficulty between the two classes and which is more related to computer science?

I feel like Bio would be easier in college than Chemistry. So AP Chem could prepare you for that. Or, you could take one of these classes for credit (if the college you might attend allows you to take credit for it)… so it could go either way

AP Bio is more memorization, chemistry has a lot of memorization but also needs some thought too.

Although if you have never programmed anything before, you really need to take AP Comp Sci, or programming classes such as Video Game Design, Ipod/Iphone App Development, etc.

I’ve taken both classes, and for me, chem was much harder. Biology is based more on understanding processes, and Chemistry is more about understanding concepts.

I think that chem would be more related to a career in computer science, because it gets a little bit into electrochemistry and basic principles of molecular physics.

That being said, neither of the two courses directly relates, so you might be better off just taking the subject that interests you more :)

Even though they’re both completely irrelevant to CS, some universities require a lab science as part of the CS degree. If you know where you want to go to college, you might look at their CS degree requirements and see if one of these courses will satisfy anything. AP Bio will be more memorization and AP Chem will have more formulas and calculations.

If you are not sure you will do really well, chem will be easier for you.

I’ve taken both, had a pretty bad experience in both. If I were you I’d pick based on the reputation of the teacher. Neither is really all that relevant to Comp Sci so don’t pick one based on that.

All else equal, take chem. No dissections :P

Well technically speaking, you can extend computer science to fields within Chemistry or Biology.

It all comes down to preference.

I chose Chemistry over Biology(Though I almost did both).
