I found out that I had a schedule conflict (for my sophomore year) for one of my art classes and AP Chemistry (I am a freshman and go to an arts school). After talking with my guidance counselor I ended up with keeping my art class, dropping AP Chemistry, and taking AP Biology.

However, the teachers at my school say to take chemistry first, as it is in biology. I also hear that in sophomore year you at least have the time to do the work for chemistry, where as if you wait until junior year you won't.

So what should I do? Is either class hard; which is harder? Pros cons, and options, please?

Also, does anyone know by chance; is the chemistry material in FLVS much different from the material taught in school(s)?

Biology is more memorization-driven; Chemistry is more conceptual and mathematical (especially the former). You don’t need a significant chemistry background to do well in Biology.

If I reviewed some chemistry material over the summer, would I be pretty well off? For both AP Biology and AP Chemistry for later?

Have you taken an introductory chemistry class? At my school, at least, one would have significant difficulty in taking AP Chemistry without this. All the chemistry you need for AP Biology, however, should be covered in the class.

I’m in AP Bio right now and it sucks. Apparently in high school, AP Bio is two and a half college classes in one. So, our reading schedule is suicidal, and everyone is way behind. I have an A, though. :]

I am in a Bio class and I took Chemistry last year. Bio is mainly memorization, but there is a lot of biochemistry. Having taken chemistry first, I find the biochemistry extremely easy. Bio will not help for chemistry. You will still learn the chemistry that you need for your class, but if you learn it before hand, you will do better.

In my school, AP chemistry’s subject matter is much harder than biology, but biology has a lot of busy work. I’d weight your course load (not to say chem doesn’t have a lot of work) and choose. I took bio and there wasn’t a lot of intricate chemistry you needed to know. Mostly atomic bonds and basics.
