I was wondering if anyone on this board has gone from a 5 in AP Calc AB to Math 112 fall of freshman year. That's what I'm planning to do. I can't say I'm all that skilled at math, the curriculum at my school was pretty slow and I was forced to repeat a lot of math during sophomore year because I was too lazy to lobby for my placement into a higher level class. Either way, my school never offered BC anyway, and I skipped precalc to take AB. In any case, I do like math a lot and sometimes I even consider double majoring in it (I'm in Arts and Sciences so don't pounce on me saying I can't double major). I just wanted to know if anyone could tell me if I'll encounter much difficulty. Will there be some review at first? Will I basically be taking it with a lot of other kids who scored a 5 on AB but not BC? I'm assuming that must be the case since I'll be taking it in the fall. Anyway, will I have to play a lot of catchup or will the transition be pretty easy? Just some background on my math proficiency: I found most of AB really easy and the pace was really comfortable. When I took the test I was pretty confident I had scored a 5.

I got a 5 in AB calculus and at first started taking Math 112 (Calc 2). I am a biology major/ premed, and after a small struggle to recall previous knowledge on integrals etc, and pretty much being scolded by other premed students i switched to Math 111.
Math 111 is a repeat of AB Calc, so it seems like a waste, but if you are premed/ preprofessional it is recommeneded that you do not use AP credit. While it may be a bit boring, it is also nice to have known the Math 111 material ahead of time, as classes move very fast. Math 112 is not needed for most majors and i realized i would be better doing Math 111 then Math 171 (intro stats) for my second math class. I think that is the best approach depending on your major and math exam placement results (I got in the top group for the math exam during O-week but still had to take math based on major and premed interest).

jcas323, can you tell me what your premed schedule was freshman year?

I'm not pre-med. Sometimes I consider Law School but that's the only specific professional school I consider. I do expect to go to grad school though.

first semester: BioG101 lecture, BioG103 lab, Chem 207 (lecture and lab combined), Math 111 (calc), and FWS: International relations.

Second semester: BioG 102 lect, BioG104 lab, Chem 208, Math 171 (stats), FWS: Mythologies, PlPa 102: Magical Mushrooms Mischeivous Molds.

You dont have to retake things you have AP credit for, but I decided to anyway. It was a bit boring, but will hopefully help for my later classes (they definately go more in depth). Math 112 (calc 2) isnt worth it because it is not required for premed or bio, and is supposively the hardest nonhonors/engineering calculus class (out of 3).

when did you take your foreign language class? My first semester schedule looks similar to yours, except I'm trying to get the language requirement out of the way...I'm thinking about not taking math at least first semester.

im in CALS so i dont have one.

oh, i see.

jcas, how was MATH 171? I didn't know that it is recommended not to use AP credits, thanks for the info.

can you guys make your own threads for your questions or just pm him? i'm trying to get advice here.

chill bongoboy. We are all trying to get advice and answers.

You are attending Cornell to challange yourself, so don't shy away from 112. As you said you felt very comfortable with AB, so take the next step and take 112. Sit in on one or two classes, if you don't feel comfortable drop it and add into 111. I had a friend who took AB then went into 112, he felt very comfortable, but then again he is majoring in Engineering. As for a review in the beginning, I think that depends on the professor. If you are thinking about majoring in math, then definitely take 112, because it shows you are interested and understand math.

Math 171 is ridiculously easy.

yg18: If you engineer friend was a Cornellian, then he took Math 191/192 which corresponds to Math 111/112 only with engineering applications.

bongoboy, jcas323 had terrific advice. Wait until your placement exam, to see what level math to take. I would rather see you do well in an easier calc. One of the red flags in your original post was the way you portrayed your school's math curriculum. If I were your advisor, I would tell you to take 111, but as jcas said, wait until your exam.

good advice, I forgot about the placement test.

There's a placement exam for cas?

August 20 10:15AM 228 Malott Hall (Bache Auditorium)

I don't think it's required for CAS but you can take it if you want. It's a placement exam not a CALS proficiency exam or engineering diagnosic exam.
