AP Calc AB + AP Stats simultaneously?

Asking on behalf of my D17 who has to start thinking about her class schedule for next year (meeting with GC 1st week of Feb to put in initial requests.) I’m trying to convince her to make her own account here but she’s feeling too shy at the moment, so I am her temporary deputy

Her HS doesn’t offer Calc BC, so AP Calc AB and AP Stats are the only “advanced” math options. She’s thinking about taking both of them next year. Anyone with opinions on whether this is do-able and/or advisable? Obviously, she’s a good math student, and would rather take another math class than something like AP Psychology or something else she’d consider to be “filler” in her schedule. She’s definitely taking Calc, and as she’s considering a science major in college, figures stats might actually come in handy.

The rest of her day would probably consist of:
AP Calc AB
AP Physics 1 (it’s the only physics offered at her HS. She’s taking AP Chem now and it’s her favorite class)
AP Economics (or AP American Gov if there’s a schedule conflict - a unit of social studies is required every year)
SUPA College English (she’s taking AP Eng Lang this year, and SUPA (Syracuse) is the only advanced Eng offered for seniors)
AP Studio Art (art is her “oasis” during the day and she’s got a pretty good portfolio already in progress)

  • lunch and gym (required)

She’s in Spanish 4 honors now but doesn’t really want to take AP Spanish. So, any of you guys taken both calc and stats in the same year and have an opinion? She’s currently got a 98 average in precalc for what it’s worth and her overall unweighted gpa is 97/100 up through the midpoint of junior year.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

@thermom I took multi-variable calculus and AP Stats in the same year, and it was quite doable.

Even though statistics can be a very advanced subject, AP Stats is generally regarded as one of the easier APs. No calculus is needed in AP Stats, but some topics might be easier to understand with a calculus background, and knowing how to construct confidence intervals or do paired t-tests, for example, could come in handy later on.

Currently taking BC and Stats and it’s very doable.

I take AP Calc BC and AP Stats right now and it’s extremely doable, and I’m not a math person at all.

@MITer94 @anxiousenior1 @emilyskates thank you so much for the replies! Great to hear, and I’ll pass this info along. Now we just cross fingers there are no schedule conflicts.

I took AP Stats and AP Calc AB simultaneously when I was a junior. It’s really easy. AP Stats is legitimately a joke; you could self study for like a five days and get a five on the exam.
