AP Calc AB vs AP Art 3D

I am currently a junior who would like some scheduling advice.

I want to drop AP Calc AB from my senior year schedule to take AP Art 3D. Art has been a passion for all my high school career, and it shows in my National Art Honor Society officer position for all these years. I have also won a few regional awards and anticipate a fair amount of success on my Drawing portfolio. I expect that art will be a strong theme in my college application. However, in order to make this happen, I will probably have to drop AP Calc AB.

I am absolutely sure that I will not be doing math or science for my major, so I would not mind taking the same courses in college. I have been fairly mediocre at math (constant B) since Algebra I. I already have enough credits (up to PAP Pre-calculus) to graduate.

Although I am not going to apply to any HYPSM colleges, the schools that I will be applying to will still be extremely competitive. I am not sure if skipping out on math for senior year would make me look like an extremely weak applicant. At the same time, I doubt that I will have a lot of success in that class.

So yeah. Any advice?

Take AP Art 3D. Sure Calculus is good, but colleges love to see students take classes they are interested in than just students who pick classes to appeal others.

Though it’s true that colleges look for what you’re interested in, I’m pretty sure your awards will speak for themselves. Applying to competitive colleges without Calculus will severely hurt your chances, I think.

Most competitive colleges want their applicants to have 4 years of math, and many like to see calculus because it’s a good gauge of how a student will perform in college-level math. I really wouldn’t recommend dropping calculus if you had to.

Is it not possible to see if you could drop another class for AP Art?

So I guess I’m taking AB Calc next year. Honestly, I think 30% of my hesitation to drop comes from the probability that I will be mediocre at calculus. And I only thought that 3D would be a really interesting challenge. So I guess I’ll see how it goes.

Thanks, guys, I appreciate the advice.

Isn’t there something else you could drop? What are the rest of your classes?
