Hello to the world of College Confidential
I was wondering if anyone here has any advice on AB vs BC. I understand that the BC curriculum is larger and goes at a faster pace than AB but I’m not really sure what I should take. I’m currently in PreCalc and I’m doing decently well but my teacher recommended me for AB only because he was concerned that the pacing of BC would be too fast for me. I don’t immediately understand the content we learn in class and most of the time to get a full understanding I have to dedicate a lot of time outside of school to master the topics. I want to do a math based major and career in the future and I also don’t want to take the risk of getting a lower grade in BC as opposed to AB…any advice or suggestions? Thanks
I would stick with your teacher’s recommendation. What type of majors are you considering in college? You may never need the material in BC.
Everything you say seems like you should do Calc AB. You can still do a math based major if you take Calc AB in HS.
I would say stick with what your teacher recommends and take AB. I’m currently in BC and the pace is extremely fast. AB is still a very difficult class, but you will have more time to grasp the concepts. And, if you perform well in AB, you can take BC the next year and already have a solid foundation to go off of!
Good luck!
AB, you do not need anything past Pre-calculus for college, really algebra 2. You will always have time to catch up in college if you do want to major in math.
I would say to not completely bias your opinion on your teacher’s recommendation, because you mention that you are “doing decently well”. On this basis, I suggest doing BC Calculus, especially considering your wanting to be a math major in college. AB would be fine, but since your college application should represent your interest in math in high school, you would be better off doing BC to create a more competitive application and increase your chances of getting in. /at the end of the day, its your choice. good luck !
