I'm planning on taking IB Math Studies next year. It is a two year course and I also want to take AP Calculus AB during the second year as a supplementary..

I'm doing this because IB Math Studies is not viewed well by most colleges.

Is this a good idea or is the shift from math studies to calculus too hard? Has anyone else done this?

Thanks

Math studies at my school is a complete joke. I’m offended it gets 6 quality points.

Why don’t you take Math SL? It covers AB Calc and definitely looks better than Math Studies.

Well it’s too late to switch to Math SL I think, and I was kind of forced into the class since they were hesitant to let anyone switch to Math SL (or SL -> HL).

Also I was wondering if Pre calculus/trig topics were necessary for AB? I know the AB class has a review in the beginning but I already have an elementary understanding.

Really? Just talk to your IB Coordinator. They usually have more flexibility with schedules than guidance.

Necessary? No. Highly recommended? Yes. If you can, you should review or look over some of that stuff the summer before. At my school for BC Calc/HL Maths, we got a summer packet to work on.

Alright then, I’ll talk to my Coordinator tomorrow then.

Thank you for the help cheeseball, I appreciate it.

Yep. :] Anything for a fellow IBer.
