AP Calculus AB or BC?

Hello, I am currently a junior at a moderately competitive public high school. I am not the best math student in the world, but I’ve maintained above a 98% in my H Pre-Calc class and got a 770 on math level 2. I hear a boatload of complaints from some of the smartest people I know about the immense difficulty of Calc BC, and I hear a smaller amount from AB students. I do not want to put my UW 4.0 GPA in danger, but then again I want to show colleges that I always take a challenge when it’s offered to me. If it is any help, I’m already have the most rigorous schedule possible and I am a humanities major aiming for HYPS. Thanks!

BC definitely requires a lot of work, so if math isn’t really your focus, there’s nothing wrong w taking AB
esp if your schedule is already very rigorous
the only other plus might be that more schools might accept BC for credit, but I’m not positive on the facts there
but if you don’t think you’d be able to get a 4/5 it might not be worth it

Go for BC! You seem like a better math student than you think. At my school, we finish the AB material in one semester, then BC the next. I got a B first semester, but a 4 on the practice ap exam with minimal studying. The material is the same as AB for the most part, just at a much faster learning rate. You will do great as long as you understand the fundamental concepts, and make sure you nail them before moving on.

Trust me, some schools offer double the credit for getting a 5 on the BC exam. The school I want to apply to offers 8 credits for a 5 on the BC exam, so if I get a five I won’t have to take a math class in college  It’ll be well worth your time to take BC now, rather than say a college-calculus class where the teacher might not care enough to help you or get you by.

Worst case, you take AB this year, keep your 4.0, then take BC or Stat next year. Good luck in whatever you do!

@northeastgirl24 @jruesmith7 Thank you for the advice guys, I’m going for BC!
