Do each problem in the set over, neatly, and bring them to class on Monday.
Use Khan Academy.
Ask her whether she might tutor you after school.
Students so often want an easy fix, when there isn’t one. Sometimes it’s just hard work. But so much easier to blame the teacher/professor and just hope to slide by with enough to pass.
just want everyone to know that i have a 20
My DD had the same issue on her AP Calculus AB as you are facing now. She had good math grades before the Calculus, and suddenly she got all these Cs and Ds from her quiz. Her teacher gave lost of homework every week and wouldn’t allow retake of tests. She was quite disappointed on herself and afraid to tell me about her grade until two month into her class. I made her did all her homework, did the even questions that were not assigned by her teacher, and those end of chapter review questions that I deem worthy to add to her study. I asked her to put her priority on the AP AB than other APs she was also taking. Average 2 to 3 hours a day on the homework. Calculus is more about mechanic than understanding, other than the end of chapter where the questions were dealing with real life application of the calculus.
Her effort did not payoff for about three months - still got C in final grade in the first semester and a few D in quiz in second semester. She was able to got A in her second semester final grade. Her teacher was the top AP Calculus teacher in the county as his students got the most 5 in AP tests.
She had the AP Calculus BC the next year with a different teacher (the AB one retired), and it was a breeze for her by then. The C was the only C in her high school career, and she wrote about it in her personal essay (partial, not the whole deal), and she still got into a very top college.
The class is just very difficult and fast pace, so it is not only you, but to many students. You just need to do more homework practice beyond what your teacher gives to you.
I think the teacher is horrible.
Is it possible to find a different tutor?
I don’t know about your teacher, but I ended up teaching my kid
I just had this conversation with my daughter today. She text me to let me know that she currently has, in her words, “a low low grade in AP Cal AB”, with everyone in her class failing the benchmark exam for this report period. Her teacher has given an assignment to improve their scores, due Friday before Spring break and the end of RP3. Now it’s time to for me to tighten the reigns, esp. during this final quarter of HS.
OP I’m so sorry this is happening to you. I know you do want to solve the problem and I’m glad you’ve reached out.
My D struggled terribly with this the first few months this year. Pre calc (and others) was A. Then calc AP was like hitting a wall. I know you’re trying. She was too. We did get her a non student tutor - one who tracked with the class so she was able to coordinate lessons. It has really made a big difference, not just in grades but in really “seeing” it.
D’s teacher - who is the hardest but best at the school - said it takes some kids longer to click. It isn’t like what you’ve done in the past - which is difficult and may be out of your comfort zone.
You are going through this mostly alone. You really should talk to your parents. Offer to pay them back for tutor - maybe this summer you will have more time for a job. Be honest and tell them you need help.
As for your teacher, I really would recommend asking her for a private meeting. Perhaps you caught her when she was trying to get ready for class. Be proactive. She doesn’t owe you a makeup but I believe she owes you some time to see if she can help break it down and identify what’s happening.
Finally - talk to your guidance counselor if you haven’t. There may be additional resources / support available.
Good luck.
