AP Calculus Dillema

So I self-studied Algebra II-Calculus AB since sophomore year (I am a junior). I am in Algebra-II Honors right now because my school is uber restrictive on courses and jumping ahead. I got special permission to take pre-cal honors and calculus next year, IF I don't take the AP test this year! AHH!

Then don’t do the test this year.

Then I can’t take the BC test next year.

If you pass the BC exam but never take the AB, wouldn’t they give you AB credit?

I don’t see why you can’t take the BC test next year, you can always take the test even if you didn’t take the class. Unless you’re required to take the AP test if you take the class, you can arrange with your counselor not to take AB, but take BC instead.

Most people take the Calculus exam during their senior years, so I guess that helps. But, then again, if you get a high score on the AP exam during your Jr. year, it will look great when you apply to colleges.

You can always explain the situation to colleges in their “extra information” section of the application. :)

**Another thing: Can you secretly take the AP exam at another school?/b BUT, then again… didn’t you already pay for your exam?

My plan was to take the AB AP test this year. And take the BC AP test next year even though I would be taking the AB class because my school doesn’t offer BC.

The CollegeBoard allows the BC exam to be taken exclusively; the AB exam is not a prerequisite. Also, the BC exam has an “AB subscore” on the same 1-5 scale, and colleges therefore [usually] accept BC as credit for anything AB would have waived.

Could you skip the exam this year, take calc in school next year, and then just take the BC exam instead of AB, separately from your class?

BC is somthing like 65% the same as AB, so I don’t think you’d have a problem covering the supplementary material on your own, especially since you seem to have so much experience with math self-study.

Good luck no matter what you decide!

Yes I did already pay for the exam, I doubt I can take it at another school. But they make me take the AB test at the school (or they will, next year). And they refuse to even order a BC test even if I did study that, and one can’t take AB and BC in the same year.

I don’t think you can be forced to take an AP exam… And if they won’t let you take it at their school, you have the right to go to another school to take the exam. (There were a few people on this site who have done this.) I would contact the College Board and talk this over with them! :)

Actually, they can. In my school if you take an AP class, you MUST take the exam in May.

^However, it depends on the school.

yeah that was the point I was trying to get across

Oh well! The best course of action I can think of would be calling the College Board tomorrow morning and trying to sort this out.
They also have late testing too… :o

@thrill3rnit3. Oh, i guess that statement wasn’t necessary, but I felt that you should have included that statement to prevent confusion. But no matter.

I’d do what nothing4me recommended and take the exam somewhere else (even though it’s too late for that, as the OP said).

Just take the BC exam next year. You don’t need the AB exam to take the BC test.
