AP Calculus *Kinda Urgent*

Ok so I'm a Freshman taking Accelerated Geometry and we made a 4 year plan so the guidance counselor can have an idea of where to place us. Since I'm taking Accelerated Geometry I won't be able to take AP Calculus B/C, I can't double up on math courses so I don't really have any other options. The option is to take Pre-Calculus my junior year and go straight into AP Calculus B/C, I'm not sure if they go over A/B and how fast it is, so i'm not sure if I wanna do this. My other option that has a 50% chance is to talk to my Math Teacher and maybe talk to the Math Department to try to take Algebra II/Trig next semester or over the summer? What should I do? I need to know by Tuesday!

A/B is not a prerequisite for B/C. If you do well in Pre-Calculus and your school’s Pre-Calc covers the prereqs for B/C you can go right into B/C.

The question you should ask is, “Does Pre-Calc prepare me for B/C if I don’t do A/B?”

This explains it fairly well;
http://www.ehow.com/info_8428412_differences-ab-ap-calculus-bc.html

AB and BC are basically the same class except AB moves slower. Don’t worry, you can hop right into BC

I would do Alg II concurrent enrollment at a community college evenings either next semester or over the summer. Then do B/C Junior year. Makes taking calc-based science classes more do-able.

No, not really. BC covers 40% more topics.

To the OP, without knowing whether your school’s BC course covers the topics in AB as well, none of us can answer your question. Each school lays out the course as it sees fit, subject to CB audit.

So can’t you take AB senior year? That is typical for even highly competitive schools. I don’t get why so many kids on CC are so anxious to accelerate further in math. If that’s your fun hobby, go for it, but it’s not expected or important for college admission or success.

My biased point of view as a former math major.

Mr. Peanut - colleges which do holistic admission consider if students took advantage of the most rigorous classes offered. Personally, I think it more useful if more kids took AP Stats instead of B/C Calc since it has a broad range of applications in many disciplines and situations encountered in daily life.

Thanks everyone , your responses were really helpful!

Yes you should check with your school as @skieurope‌ said. AP Calc is AP Calc, AB or BC both show that you are doing your best to master/improve in mathematics.
