I am in a bit of a problem. I am currently a senior enrolled in the full IB Program at a large high school with around 2,500 students, so class rank should be pretty decent (we havn't received ours yet). Last year, before I knew any better, I signed up for AP Statistics senior year (because I took IB Math SL junior year, which is a one year course). Now, I realize that Stern and most business schools prefer to see Calculus on students' applications. I have tried and tried and tried to get into AP Calculus AB, but all periods of it are full, so unless somebody drops soon, I'll be stuck in AP Stats.

so my question is...does being in AP Stats instead of AP Calculus, hurt your chances of getting into Stern?

if so, can your other credentials (grades, ECs, etc...) make up for it?

also in the pecking order of acceptable math classes, does it go: AP Calc BC, AP Calc AB, and AP Stats?

my weighted academic gpa last year was 5.0. so overall gpa for the four years should be in the high 4's.

As long as you show potential in math it shouldn't be a problem (i.e. your math grades are good). However, if you can get into that Calc course it would be a good idea.

AP stat is not a bad course for buisness students. Actually most buisness schools prefer students with a more STAT based math. Either will do though

that's exactly what i thought too. taking stats for business is only logical, but i actually called up nyu, and they said that they prefer to see Calculus. ehhhhh....this is frustrating.

haha. i definately cannot take both. Because of IB, I already have a full schedule plus a zero hour, which means i'm at school for 8 hours. and i only have one period free for a math class. thanks for all of your input tho

Take calc. Colleges know that AP stats is a joke and Calc can be challenging, and competitive schools like to see that you've taken calc. They can be suspicious if you get up to precalc and then take stat instead of calc. You can always take stat in college, but you'll be running to catch up if you need to take econ, etc and haven't had calculus.

I agree with #9. AP Stats is a joke and if you're smart enough to go to Stern, you will be bored silly by that class. BC Calc is more serious, and is something approaching a college-level class.

Why not talk to an admissions officer and explain the situation? At my school, AP Calculus is really bad. The teacher doesn't know what she is doing and most of the kids last year did not even bother taking the AP test. When I visited a school this summer, I told the admissions guy that that was the reason I was taking AP Stats and he said I should be fine. I think most schools would prefer AP Calc.
