AP Calculus?

On the website, it says 94% of admitted students have taken at least ap calc or equivalent. Would ap stat be considered equivalent? Do I really only have a 6% chance of getting in if I didn’t take calculus? If I would have known about this, I would have taken calc over stat, but it’s too late now…

Hmm, you’re taking stats and it’s been a while for me. I think your chances could be better than 6% (maybe even WAY better), or they could actually be WORSE than 6%. It depends on the whole package. I wouldn’t get hung up on that, although they MAY consider it an equivalent. Sounds like a ‘brag’ on the part of GTech, not an admission requirement. 7% of students are African American at GT. If you’re black, it doesn’t mean you only have a 7% chance of admission.

Keep on keepin’ on, and keep your grades up. Good luck!

Georgia Tech is big on Calculus and yes i have heard of steller students being denied while their classmate was accepted and calculus seems to be a common thread that i have noticed in conversations with other parents.

Two years ago, a GT Admission rep told my DD that they “wouldn’t seriously consider her application without her taking Calculus.” My D had transferred high schools and it prohibited her from taking Calculus her senior year. The GT rep told my DD to figure out a way to take Calculus so that is what my DD did. She look Pre-Cal online over the summer and AP Calculus her senior year. She is now a second year at GT.

I asked GT what they meant by “equivalent” and they said it means regular Calculus, college-level Calculus (through dual-enrollment), basically some form of Calculus. I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but AP stats is not the equivalent. To be a viable applicant for GT, the student must have taken Calculus.

Oh well! :frowning: thanks for the replies! I’ll still apply but if I don’t get in I’ll just try to transfer in next year. I have guaranteed conditional acceptance because my sister goes there, so there’s still hope that I can graduate from GTech!

Calculus is integral (no pun) to the curriculum for most majors at Tech - it is extremely important to have. AP stat is quite different and more theoretical. While it doesn’t completely eliminate you from the running, it definitely hurts :frowning:
