Anyone felt like their score was a surprise ? I sure felt, I thought I did well and I got a 3. I requested a rescore but not sure anything will change. Plan to retake it if not.
It won’t
Time to move on. If you are taking other APs next year, your time is better spent focusing on those.
What about the prospects of BS /MD admission with this score ? Since Chem is so important.
BS/MD admissions is exceptionally tough as it is, but it still will not hinge on an AP score - not when so many other aspects of the application are more important. Whether a 3 in chem is indicative of weaknesses in other areas is something that cannot be answered in a vacuum.
C was also caught off guard by AP chem score. Every practice test taken showed a high 5, nowhere near the cut off for a 4. Yet, the official score is a 4. Chem subject test = 800.
@skieurope, I’ve seen you post on numerous threads that 4’s & 5’s should be reported. But what if that 4 is in your field of interest and you are applying to schools like Stanford, Princeton, Harvard. In that case would you not report 4’s? I know admissions will not hinge on an AP score of 4, but could it tip you in the wrong direction, everything else being equal?
A 4 is a very good score. In many subjects, the percentage of 5’s is about 10%,. For chem it was 10.7% There are very few courses at HYS where the percentage of A’s is 10%, and intro chem is not one of them (at least at Harvard - well, they don’t really offer the traditional intro chem anymore, but I digress). A couple of 4’s will not make-or-break. So I stand by what I’ve said in the past.
Now, if the applicant has mostly 4’s, while I would not say not to apply and report to HYS, I would say that the applicant (as is the case with all applicants) should have a list balanced with matches and safeties.
Thank you for the reassurance, @skieurope . All other STEM scores are 5’s.
And most definitely, HYS is still a far reach. C has matches and safeties on the list too (though is anything really a safety when you have to worry about yield protection too?)
Yes. The trick is not to let the college know that it’s a safety.
@skieurope , I am a rising junior any advise on how to craft my junior year to improve my admission chances to BS MD program. My stats so far are AP stat, AP world -4, AP chem - 3, AP bio- 5, SAT Bio- 800. Extracurriculars don’t have a lot of leadership activities. I am involved in research in both summers although no published articles. I was placed top 10 in national brain bee. My AP course load for Junior year include AP Phys, Calc BC, seminar, econ. Thank you.
Ask in the BS/MD forum. There are many knowledgeable members there that can guide, but it’s not one of my specialties. Good luck.
