I'm uncertain of which to take for senior year. On one hand, all my friends are taking AP chem and the teacher who teaches it is a joke, so it would probably be an easy A. The trouble is, I have taken Pre-IB chemistry sophomore year, then IB chemistry this year, and I wonder if colleges will frown upon me taking chemistry for a third year as an easy way out? If I take bio, I believe the course is tougher and would be more work, however, it might look better to colleges. What do you think?

I honestly don’t think it’ll make that much of a difference. They’ll probably just assume that you’re really interested in chemistry.

I think increased coursework should be an acceptable trade-off for looking better to adcoms. It seems that AP Biology is more of a senior class than AP Chemistry, especially if you’ve already taken chemistry before. Although which one would seem more relevant to your prospective major may influence your choice, I would still advise you to take biology.

Why waste your time in a class that you wont be learning much? If you are bored, it will become torture to attend. Why not take a class that will hold your interest if only via the increased challenge? Don’t take the easy way out because if you check out, it will go bad quickly.

I liked ap bio, it was an interesting class. For me it would probably depend on who’s teaching. It shouldn’t be too much added work out of class as long as you stay awake and listen.

I took AP chem last year and I’m taking AP bio this year. My conclusion is that I did so much better in my AP chem class. My AP bio teacher just doesn’t teach. So I guess it really depends on your teacher.

This is our experience from my daughter’s high school:

AP Bio covers a lot of material. It’s more of a read and memorize class. There’s a LOT of reading.

AP Chem is more like a math class with a problem set every day. There wasn’t as much reading (still a good bit, but not as much as Bio), but there was a lot more problem-type homework.
