I'm a HS junior. I'm starting to pick my classes for next year, and so far I'm doing:
AP Calc BC
AP Physics
AP Lit
AP Gov
Yearbook (need this, seeing as I'm editor in chief)

...And I seem to have room for one more AP. My question is: Which would look better to college AdComs? AP Chem or AP French? I'm currently in Honors French 4 (started French in 6th grade, continued through middle school; went into French 2 freshman year). I could take AP French 5 to finish it off, or demonstrate my vast interest in science via AP Chem. I want to major in engineering in college, particularly at Northwestern.

Thanks guys!

if you’re planning on being an engineering major, take chem. french will look great too, but it will probably look better to have advanced classes in the area you want to pursue. however, you make it seem like you’d drop french altogether, which may or may not be a good idea. on one hand dropping one subject to double up in another shows direction, but on the other hand it makes you less well-rounded. i think that since you’re more interested in science, AP chem makes more sense, but you should definitely talk to your school guidance counselor about whether or not that’s a good idea.

Hmmm…I want to show depth in science, but I do want to appear well-rounded. Also, no doubt French will be easier…hmph.

Take chem Ap French sucks unless you like French and it’s alot easier then chem tho

AP French is hideously difficult. The exam will crush your soul and destroy your dreams. Among standard students - who aren’t native speakers and haven’t lived in a French-speaking country - less than 20% score above a three. Less than half pass.

Unless you want to work in Quebec, French will be useless for an engineering major. And “well-rounded” is overrated.

This is an easy question. Take chem.

Take Chem. There is absolutely no reason for you to take French. After High School you will forget all of your French. However, seeing as you want to be an engineer, you need Chem. Also taking Physics, Chem, and Calc at once is fun. Im in at atm. ;]

My only concern is the difficulty of taking Calc, Physics, and Chem at the same time. With extra-currics in the mix as well, can it be done!?
