AP Chem v. Honors Chem

At my school, sophomore year is bio (Gate is the highest) and junior year is chem (honors is the highest). However, my friends and I were able to skip gate bio and just take ap bio this year (were sophomores) and are doing very well. I hear that at my school, honors chem is a very tough class....would it make sense for us to take ap chem instead, assuming we get a tutor over the summer to review some basic concepts, as well as read parts/all of the textbook?

I have a hard time believing that AP Chem would be easier than honors, but if you get a tutor prior to taking the class I don't think there will be a problem. However, I do think that taking an Honors class first makes AP a lot easier.

I felt that AP chemistry was easier than honors chemistry for me only because I TOOK honors before AP chem. I think AP is just a lot of review from chem honors. You can try....my friend skipped to AP and got A's and a 5 on the test. Good luck!

Is it a LOT more conceptual than bio? I feel that I'm doing well with bio because I'm good with definitions...am I jumping the gun?

Biology is all memorization Chemistry (and Physics) is more problem solving, applications, etc. It's also more mathematically based.

Hmm for now I'll stick with honors, but as the end of this school year approaches, well be hearing more news about who they'll hire for ap chem (its not offered this year b/c not enough people signed up). a lot of people say that the lady who is currently teaching honors wants ap also, and they say shes TERRIBLE, so i guess it might come down to who gets to teach it

I had a horrible AP Chem teacher and got a 5. It really depends on yourself. If they don't hire that lady as AP teacher and you really want to, you could always take honors chem and AP independent study. It's basically the same thing, but AP goes into much more detail, and faster as well. I remember doing Hess's law in AP in like September and all my honors friends were doing it in February.

Chem is relaxing compared to bio. In bio if you forget a fact, you're screwed. In chem, you can always use your knowledge to try and get a reasonable answer. It's more math, so I think it's easier because it's basic math concepts applied to formulas etc..The easiest part...GAS LAWS!!! I loved those things..

My AP Chemistry class curved a ton. My AP Biology class had no curve at all! (I found Biology a lot easier than Chemistry, but it still deserved at least some sort of curve). My AP Physics class curves pretty well.

ok bio is like pure analysis, chem is like some analysis and some calculations and physics is like pure calculations

I have friends at my school who took regular biology freshman year and then never took an introductory science class again. They went to AP Bio, then AP Chem than AP Physics C. If you review before the class, I think you should be fine.

my friend got an A last year in regular chem and got a D in AP chem this year.
