So I'm sure many students have the option of choosing one, and would not kill themselves choosing both, but don't know which one to pick. Which one do CCer's advise? Which is more interesting, and which is more helpful? How much time do you devote to each? Which is harder?

Thanks, i think this will help a lot of students, including myself =).

Why not put Physics in here too?

Just because generally people have the hardest time choosing between chem and bio.

Ok.
IMHO (only taken AP Bio so far, I’m in Chem 11 hon) Bio is a lot of memorizing/remembering.
But seriously if ur class covered most of the stuff and even if you’re a B student, you can get a 5. That’s only if your class covered most of the stuff/you self studied.

Or if worst comes to worst, hole yourself up in your room for a weekend or two. That’s what I did. (5.)

But asking us to pick between the two is sort of like comparing apples and oranges, isn’t it? It really depends on where your interests lie. Having said that, however, Bio is definitely a lot more memorizing facts, while Chem requires more understanding. And math (though if you have a TI-89…) Out of the two, I’d say Chem is harder–you can make former students scream just by uttering the word “electrochemistry.” Or “thermodynamics.” Or “equilibrium”–it really depends on the kid. :P

Kinda like the Biology equivalent to photosynthesis and cellular respiration!

“organic chem” is the one word which will send anyone who has taken the class screaming

AP Physics.

Settled.

just kidding. I can’t comment since I haven’t taken either :)

This question really boils down to what you specialize in better.

Do you like chemistry more than biology or the other way around?

Do you like them both equally? If so, why not stress yourself and self-study Biology and take AP Chem at school?

Biology has a tremendous amount of memorizing, but Chemistry is a bit more difficult, in terms of memorization and learning curve.

Physics is much harder than chem or bio.

Concerning chem vs. bio, chem is grounded in analytical thinking and a little bit of math. Bio is brute memorization. Take your pick.

If you’re pretty good at both, or pretty bad at both, take Bio. Bio is so much easier. Even people who are good at chem, are more likely to get a 5 on Bio from studying over the weekend than a 5 on chem. I took both, had pretty good/decent teachers for both, and found Bio to be MUCH easier.

There are some exceptions of course. You should pick the one that you had an easier time with in your honors class.

You can’t get a 5 in Bio by studying over the weekend…

Unless you already learned the material before and know it extremely well.

I mean, if you paid attention in class somewhat and kind of know the material, it’s easier to cram over the weekend than it is to learn concepts of Chemistry over the weekend.

And also with Bio, for some reason after learning it in class I remembered it, but with Chem after I learned it for a chapter test, I forgot it.

lol, I gotta say…

both.

BUT they were in separate years… bio for junior and chem for senior :)

just that they go together laaaa.
