I will be a Junior this Fall and last year I wanted to sign up for AP Chem but I was not able to because I had not taken the required math classes (Algebra 2). I am taking it now over the summer but I still want to take AP Chem. If I pass my Algebra 2 test will it be too late to ask to be admitted into AP Chemistry? I have not taken the Placement Exam. I am currently enrolled in Advanced Chemistry. I got a B in Biology last year so yeah not so great but do you think a B is enough to get into AP Chem?

This is completely up to the discretion of your school and your guidance department. There is no way that anyone on this forum can answer those questions. Have a nice day. :)

Well how well did you do in Biology and did you take AP Chemistry?

I got high A’s in bio and never took AP chem.

I guess you’re right. I’m afraid to ask because I spent so much time asking for them to let me take Algebra 2 over the summer but I ended up having to teach myself. I don’t want to ask for more and more because then I will just seem greedy.

Who cares? Do what you have to do to get the job done.

Should I bother asking 4 weeks before school starts?

Not to be mean but if you are having trouble passing alg2, ap chem might be a problem for you. It is much harder

If guidance is in there…our guidance doesn’t come back until the week before school. I’d think that as early as possible would be best.

Well I’m not having trouble passing Algebra 2, my instructor is somewhere in Canada so he left most of the work up to me.

Well the main issue is that I have not taken the placement exam.

If you got a B in Biology, AP Chem might pose some problems.

My AP Chem grade was over 30% lower than my Honors Biology grade. Honors Chem takes a lot of thinking and creativity.

This is news to me…

Here’s the thing with Honors Chem. If you can do basic stuff, you’ll be fine. Then again, my honors chem introduced the nomenclature in Organic Chem, which was easy.

^^
Typo, I meant AP Chem. Honors Chem is a joke.

Unfortunately my school does not offer honors chem, just chem, adv chem, and ap chem.

OT: MIThopeful16 does the “MIT” prefix show that you have been admitted into MIT? I know it seems like a dumb question but I can see lots of people doing that just so it looks like they went to MIT. I am in no way saying you aren’t/haven’t going/gone to MIT.

No, I’m only in HS. I’m an MIT Hopeful, however.

I’m just going to say, taking AP Chem with no previous chemistry experience is going to hurt you majorly. Also, having a B in Biology (not AP) does not bode well for how AP Chemistry will go.

If you can do more problem solving chemistry, then you can survive in AP Chem.
