AP Chemistry (in general)

Ugh, bad year for AP Chem.

Our original teacher retires after the first quarter.
We get a weird substitute for 4 weeks.
Now we have a teacher who is fantastic, but slow to cover the material.

And since we are already behind, I've been studying myself but..its hard :(

What are you guys studying now in your classes?

In class, we're doing Redox Equations (T_T)
I'm studying Thermodynamics.

What 'bout y'all?

we're covering over lattice energy now

did thermodynamics, kinetics, radioactivity, and equilibrium this term.. my exam's tomorrow :(

My teacher broke her foot last week, so we've had four days of nothing. We'll be in hyper-drive when she returns. We're doing molecular orbital thoery, VSEPR theory, Lewis structures, covalent/ionic bonding, etc.

I was in the same scenario...had kinda sucky teacher for first half of the year, but she went on maternity leave. She was replaced by an amazing sub teacher, but it was too late in the year.
--Sadly, I only scored a 3. But I'm sure you'll do fine...GL

single,double replacement reaction.

we're doing atomic structure, waves, atoms, etc.

Redox reactions? Double replacement reactions?! We had to know that before the school year started. We had to do work for the first four chapters over the summers.

We're basically going straight through Zumdahl's. Now we're on chapter 8 - bonding. We went through Lewis structures and the VSEPR model and all that good stuff. We're testing on it this week I believe.

molecular geometries/polarity/IMFs

My teacher jumps all over the tenth edition of LeMay's Chemistry: The Central Science.

we covered 75 percent of the course and its only been three months only have like equilibrium left

After just having finished molecular orbitals, we are now dealing with functional groups and nomenclature of organic chemicals.

Acids/Bases. We have to take a year of chem before so none of that beginning stuff. :) We jump around a lot, but I trust my teacher, she's really really good (ohio chemistry teacher of the year a year or two ago) :D

Success on the exam depends mostly on the order in which the curriculum is covered. In my case, our class completed the harder subjects in the first semester and the easier stuff like nuclear reactions and thermodynamics in the second semester. Over all, the passing rate was over 50%, which was pretty good for a class that was only two years old and was affected by last years hurricane season that battered florida. Also my city was hit directley by Charlie, Francis, and Jean.

we have that Chemistry - the central science book as well. We just finished MO's and bonding and lewis structures and periodic trends and geometry and gases all on one test. Now we're on Intermolecular attraction forces and crap.

Yea, Im also using that same book, chemistry: the central science.
We're currently doing kinetics (rate laws, etc.) Great teacher too.

is the exam more conceptual or nitty gritty calc stuff??

Well, you guys do stuff in different order.

I think we went like this

Review (stoichiometry, etc) - Redox and Solution - Electrokem - Thermochem and Thermodynamics (Spontaenity) - Nuclear Chem - Atomic Structure, Periodicity, Theory - Molecular Geometry and Bonding - Gas Laws - Equilibrium

Great teacher, great class (and great grade =D)

Our Chem teacher has got to be the worst teacher ever. She expects us to already be at like PhD Level or something. Including the all ten of the top ten people in our junior class of 529 (Chem class is 45) in chem, only about half are passing.......Anywhoo, we have covered everything except for Equilibrium which we'll do next semester. AP Chem exam is near and it seems like winterbreak is the perfect time to relearn everything we didnt learn this semester......For us, its not how fast we cover everything, its that she sucks at teaching so we dont understand any of it.....Thnx for letting me rant on how my chem teacher obliterated any likeness I had for Chemistry...

Zumdahl Chap 11
