AP Chemistry ?

Hi I’m a ninth grader, and I am currently signed up to take gym next year. Gym is a requirement in order to graduate high school. If you play a varsity sport for 2 years u don’t have to take gym, I’m going to play 2 years varsity for sure so I don’t have to take gym. I have the choice to take AP chemistry next year but I’m not sure wether to take it or not. If I take gym I’ll have an easy 4.1( including AP history). If I take AP chemistry I’ll have a 4.3 but I’m scared that I won’t get an A if I take the class. A new teacher is going to come next year to teach the class so I’m not sure if it will be easy or difficult for me. If I take the class I’m going to probably going to get around the A- to A range. I don’t want to ruin my GPA because of AP chem. Any advice on what I should do?

I’m trying to higher my GPA as much as I can and I don’t want to end up blowing my chance of getting all A’s

Have you taken Honors Chem?

Yes I took it this year

I would advise not to take AP Chemistry unless you already have background knowledge of chemistry. Difficulty of the course depends on your school and teacher, but AP Chemistry is generally one of the hardest AP classes you can take. It is essential that you understand everything that you learn in Chemistry as topics build upon each other. Also, don’t take AP classes that you are not interested in just to maximize your GPA.

I’m taking honors chem this year, but yes your right. I’m just going to take gym. Thank you for the advice!

If you want to take AP Chem, like what the @avionx said, it’s one of the hardest AP classes out there. You need a solid foundation in Chemistry and since you said there’s a new chem teacher coming next year, anything can happen. If you want to pursue a health science or some other field where chemistry is needed, then go for it. Right now, you’re a freshman, don’t go charging into AP courses thinking that you’ll do well. I thought that when I did AP Bio and AP Calc BC in my senior year and I didn’t as well as I thought. If you think you’re up for the challenge, go for it! Nothing’s stopping you, but give it all your effort to make sure you get that A. If you don’t, then it’s not the end of the world. Besides, you have three more years of high school left, you can certainly take it later on.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

I’m assuming you’ll be a sophomore next year? Personally I would take AP Chem bc I despise gym (used a sport for my credit) but you may be different. Do you have another science class?

Ya, I understand, like u said I’d rather not charge into AP chem thinking it’ll be easy, I’ll stick to gym! Thanks for your advice!

Yes I’m also going to have honors biology next year. Personally, I’m good at gym, I could easily get an A so that’s one class I won’t have to worry about.
